Styrian Summer Art: T-shirts turned into carpets – tufting with Lisa D.
General Information
Workshop Description:
Tufting refers to a technique for creating textile surfaces with a pile layer. It can be considered a mixed technique between sewing and embroidery.
In this workshop, we will explore the history and technique of tufting, as well as the construction of the tufting frame and stretching the tufting cloth. When reviewing the brought wool remnants and T-shirts, the issues of fast fashion and textile waste will also be discussed.
We will begin with an introduction to operating the tufting machines (cut pile and loop pile) and start processing our materials: cutting the T-shirts, designing an individual carpet, transferring the pattern onto the tufting cloth, tufting the carpet. Joint tufting on a large object is also planned.
At the end of the workshop, we will present our works.
Please bring:
- used T-shirts, leftover wool - as much as possible!
- your own good tailor's scissors
- pens
Material fee: approx. € 80,- for tufting cloth, tufting frame, carpet adhesive, brushes, proportional equipment rental
