Workshop Description:
Weather permitting, we will take advantage of the diverse opportunities offered by the beautiful location of Pöllau, its architecture, nature, and the expansive castle park with all its colorful splendor, to paint with oil colors like the Impressionists. For specific motivational requests and in case of bad weather, we can work from high-quality reference photos and a welcoming, splendid still life in the classroom.
Topics will include material knowledge, proper composition and layout of images, mixing colors, and a figurative implementation with individually varying levels of abstraction. Abstract acrylic paintings can be supplemented and expanded with figurative, realistic painting.
This small, fine course allows for many individual requests regarding the painting method, choice of subject, and the expressive form of each participant.

Please bring:
- Several reference photos in high resolution and very good color and subject quality (min. A4).
- At least 4 primed canvases (40 x 50, 50 x 60 cm depending on the desired subject, always 2 with the same dimensions).
- Disposable palettes or glass palette (e.g. an old picture frame at least 40 x 50).
- Razor blade scraper, turpentine oil balm or odorless alternative.
- Brushes in at least three sizes (small and pointed, medium, approx. 1 cm, flat, approx. 2 to 3 cm, and flat).
- Painting cloth, painting spatula, tape, deer soap, resealable small jar, painter's coat, 8 pushpins.
- Burnt Sienna acrylic paint.
- White watercolor or chalk pencil.
- Oil paints: Titanium white, Naples yellow, Cadmium yellow, Scarlet lake (red), Alizarin crimson, Light ochre, Burnt Sienna, Umbra, Cobalt blue, Ultramarine blue, Yellow green, Sap green, Phthalo green, Mallow color, Ivory black.
For example, the colors from Georgian/Daler-Rowney.
Colors will be provided by the instructor for a material fee of €40, in case someone would like to try out the material first.
The Artist:
Julia Bauernfeind, born in Klagenfurt, lived for ten years in the USA, where she studied Graphic Design, Illustration, and Painting at California State University Long Beach. Since her graduation with a Master of Fine Arts, the freelance artist has been living and working in Graz.
