Styrian Summer Art: Rethinking Balkan singing with Irina Karamarković
General Information
Beyond Balkanization: Rethinking "Balkan Song"
This weekend, we will immerse ourselves in the music of Southeastern Europe ("Balkans"). In the singing workshop, we will bring songs, melodies, and rhythms from Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and North Macedonia to life in their regional uniqueness and personal tonal colors.
Together, we will sing and play traditional songs while gaining insights into their cultural context and significance. The focus will be on voice, breath, body sound, and different languages.
We will also work on breath technique, phrasing, vocal development, and linguistic expression. Playfully, we will explore resonance spaces, rhythm, melody, and improvisation.
No prior knowledge or music reading skills are required.
Please bring:
- Curiosity and willingness to engage vocally with the unfamiliar
