Styrian Summer Art: Nature in painting and textile art with Dunja Krcek
General Information
An artistic engagement with plants in painting and textile art from drawing to quilt
We approach the world of plants through drawing and textile art. At the center is a slowed-down, exploratory practice: the careful observation of plants and the translation of these observations into our own artistic processes.
We begin outdoors – with open senses. What shapes, colors, and textures can be discovered? How does a plant move, what shadow does it cast, what sounds, what neighbors accompany it? Through various techniques such as pencil drawing, watercolor, gouache, or collages with natural finds, a growing visual diary emerges. Courage to shift perspectives and playful experimentation are paramount.
Through repeated observation of a chosen plant situation, small stories develop: personal connections, memories, atmospheres. These stories form the basis for the second phase of the workshop, where we work with locally and seasonally naturally dyed fabrics.
From these, textile collages and hand-sewn quilts are created. The shared dyeing, cutting, and sewing generate a rhythmic workflow of nature exploration and textile shaping.
The workshop invites participants to sharpen their perception and rediscover the connection between nature, material, and artistic expression. In the end, a small, personal plant quilt, along with a bundle of studies, memories, and drawing exercises, is created – a poetic companion for future artistic paths.

Workshop leader
Dunja Krcek (*1990) is a visual artist living in Vienna.
In 2018, she received her diploma from the University of Applied Arts, in the painting, tapestry, and animation class. She primarily works with the media of painting, textiles, and site-specific installations.
In her practice, she is interested in the visual exploration of the concepts of atmosphere, relational space, and ‘felt sense’. She understands her work as a correspondence and direct interaction with specific places. With her installations, she aims to initiate participatory and intimate spaces that provide a framework to connect with the surroundings and oneself. During artist-in-residence stays in Finland, Peru, and Iceland, she has acquired extensive knowledge of plant pigments, which she shares and teaches in workshops.
