Styrian Summer Art: Color, Rhythm, Woven Experiences| Silvia Brandi
General Information
Workshop Description:
Note: The workshop will be held in English.
In this workshop, we will extract colors directly from nature and translate them into a woven piece. We will start with a walk through the Pöllauer Tal nature park, collecting dye plants and exploring the language of natural colors.
In the studio, we will dye wool yarns with the collected and other plant-based dyes in various shades. While the yarns dry, you will design your own small kilim, as a carpet or wall hanging, and learn how to set up a simple, laser-cut frame from FarmLab.
In the following days, weaving will become a quiet act of artistic observation – color, rhythm, and memory blend into a personal interpretation of the landscape.
No prior knowledge is required, and all materials will be provided. You will take home your handwoven kilim along with knowledge about dyeing and weaving with the colors of nature.
Please bring:
- Apron or old clothes for dyeing
- A pair of rubber or household gloves
- Notebook (preferably with squared pages) and colored pencils for sketches and color studies
- Optional: dried onion skins, dried avocado peels, and pits for communal dyeing.
Material Contribution: Approx. € 25,- per participant for the provided materials and tools, including:
- Pre-treated wool yarns for dyeing and weaving
- Selection of plant-based dyes (collected and dried), cotton yarn for the warp threads
- Reusable, laser-cut wooden loom (20 × 25 cm) to take home
- Weaving tools and accessories (needles, shuttles, etc.)
