The Eastern Styria winter needle

Eastern Styria impresses with its small but beautiful ski resorts with affordable skiing, easily accessible pistes, short and stress-free approaches. There is also plenty to experience and relax away from the slopes. Excellent cross-country ski trails, winter and snowshoe hikes, toboggan runs, winter wellness and much more await you.

There is a small gift for those who achieve the Winter Needle, which can be collected from the Almenland Nature Park or Joglland-Waldheimat offices.

Let's go

Tobogganing

Sledding is fun for the whole family and a great experience for groups. Children are in good hands with the magic carpets – the simple lifts make life easier for parents and allow for endless fun on the slopes. For groups, longer natural toboggan runs offer real adventure, often with a stop for refreshments afterwards. When there is good natural snow cover, you can even go off-piste into the valley – but only after a somewhat strenuous climb on foot.

Ski tours

Forests deeply covered in snow, powder and a dreamlike winter panorama create unforgettable impressions on uphill or downhill ski tours. Beginners in particular find easy ski tour routes in the Eastern Styria.

Ice climbing

If you are looking for a challenge on the cliffs during the winter months, ice climbing is just the thing for you. A hot tip for exciting ice climbing for beginners and experts is the Tiefenbachgraben in Breitenau am Hochlantsch. Here the 23-metre high ice waterfall “Alice” awaits you. There is an additional 18 m tall ice column for learning the basic techniques, and bouldering is offered.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides

The landscape in Eastern Styria is a unique place on earth, with a natural beauty that accounts for the region’s charm. As a romantic interlude for a couple or with the whole family, a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow covered landscape is a winter fairy tale come true!

Ice skating & curling

For younger guests, lakes and ice rinks offer plenty of space to let off steam, while couples can enjoy romantic ice skating in historic old towns. Learning aids such as penguins or pandas help beginners. Now all you have to do is put on your skates or rent some on site—and hit the ice.

Curling is one of the most traditional winter sports in Eastern Styria. For decades, people have been meeting on lovingly laid out natural ice rinks—often behind a tavern—to play curling. Refreshments, “dumpling shooting,” and a warming cup of tea or mulled wine are, of course, part of the fun.
