Styrian Summer Art: Cyanotype - Iron blue printing with Ángela Tröndle
General Information
Workshop - Description:
You will discover the enchanting technique of cyanotype and create small works of art in blue. This old photographic printing process (developed in 1842 by the astronomer Sir John Herschel), also known as blue printing, works entirely without a camera. On pre-coated solar paper as well as on self-sensitized papers, we will place plants and other materials to expose them to sunlight. As a result, the shadows of the objects placed will appear in white and various shades of blue on the paper.
A wonderfully simple process that allows for a great deal of experimentation and improvisation, accommodating a wide range from the simple beauty of a plant photogram to intricately thought-out experiments with additional materials. In this workshop, we will explore this diversity and you will take home a small, fine collection of self-created images and postcards.
The workshop is suitable for both those who have never worked with the technique as well as those with prior knowledge who want to expand their artistic and creative spectrum with the help of various extensions (photonegatives, wet cyanotype, stencils, double coating/exposing, various mixed techniques).
The cyanotype offers the opportunity to capture snapshots that arise from the encounter of sky & earth with a piece of paper, created by the creative nature of a person.

The artist:
Ángela Tröndle, born in 1983 in Salzburg, grew up in a musical family and received a versatile musical education in her childhood and youth. The creative environment she later encountered at the artistic gymnasium influenced her in many ways and brought her into contact with other arts.
- From 2001 to 2010 she studied music education, jazz singing, and jazz composition at the University of Graz. Besides her musical projects, Tröndle has always found the exchange with artists from other fields very important, such as with visual artist Daniel Domig and dancer & choreographer Mirjam Klebel.
- In the performance "open ||: Beginning, End :||" (2019), she connected her own visual works (an abstract photo series) with her music for the first time.
- In 2020, she initiated the silent nature format "SILENT WALK".
- Since 2021, Ángela Tröndle has been actively involved in the visual arts in addition to her work as a musician, composer, and educator, primarily working with cyanotype in addition to watercolor and collage.
- From May to June 2024, her first major solo exhibition "Landscapes of a quiet mind" will take place at the Sargfabrik in Vienna, showcasing nearly 40 works from the past 3 years.
- In December 2025, she will present new cyanotypes in her exhibition "WE ARE NATURE" at the Frei.Haus gallery in Vienna.
