    Abundant nature in the north – wine and pumpkins in the south. And right in the middle the city of Graz: UNESCO world heritage and culinary capital of Austria. Cycling along the Mur, you gain fascinating insights into the history and culture of Styria and can take a look behind the scenes of culinary manufactories. Along the way, you will experience water in all its different facets – from lovely rest spots along the Mur to refreshing swimming lakes and impressive gorges and stalactite caves.

    eight stages along the Mur

    The Mur cycle path takes you along eight stages from the Hohe Tauern National Park all the way through the province of Styria to Legrad in Croatia. During every stage, cyclists gain fascinating insights into the history of the towns, villages and people along the way and get to discover unforgettable natural highlights.

    From the Hohen Tauern mountains to the Wine Country

    A journey along what is probably the most varied river cycle path in the Alpine region. Mountains and alpine pastures in the north, vineyards and river wetlands in the south, and in between Graz, the Capital of Culinary Delights with its UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the historic city centre and Eggenberg Castle.

    Stage 01

    From Sticklerhütte to St. Michael im Lungau

    The first stage of your cycle tour takes you to St. Michael im Lungau. Before you jump into the saddle, we recommend a hike to Brunnwand, where you can enjoy the serene atmosphere of the crystal-clear origins of the river Mur.

    Stage 02

    From St. Michael im Lungau to Murau

    This stage is all about wood in its different shapes and sizes. Once you have reached the medieval brewing town of Murau with its impressive castle, it’s time to sit down with a cool pint of Murauer beer and expand your vocabulary. For instance, do you know what “Heihitt‘n” or “Hoanz’n” mean?

    Stage 03

    From Murau to Judenburg

    This stage is full of historic and contemporary highlights. During the first part of this stage, you cycle along the Mur Valley Railway. There are plenty of rewarding side trips, for instance to the local ruins, the fairytale forest or to one of Europe’s most state-of-the-art planetariums.

    Stage 04

    From Judenburg to Leoben

    A leisurely ride along the Mur takes you to Leoben, passing by the Red Bull Ring and lots of well-kept Old Towns with bustling pedestrian zones. At Göss Abbey, you can follow in the footsteps of famous politicians and taste the popular Gösser beer which was already served during the signing of the Austrian state treaty.

    Stage 05

    From Leoben to Graz

    This section of the cycle path is characterised by unspoilt natural habitats and romantic towns such as Bruck an der Mur or Frohnleiten. Your destination is the provincial, cultural and culinary capital of Graz, with its Mediterranean atmosphere and distinctive clock tower perched up on Schlossberg mountain.

    Stage 06

    From Graz to Leibnitz

    This route gets you in the mood for the upcoming wine roads in southern Styria. If you would like to visit Europe’s highest-located wine village, leave the main route at Leibnitz and stop for a break at Kitzeck.

    Stage 07

    From Leibnitz to Bad Radkersburg

    Accompanied by the murmuring water of the Mur, this section of the route takes you past the fields and lowland forests of the Unteres Murtal Biosphere Reserve on to the romantic spa town of Bad Radkersburg.

    Stage 08

    From Bad Radkersburg to Legrad

    The last stage of the cycle path is no less impressive. The distance of 100 kilometres is perfect for two days of cycling. This leaves you with enough time to savour the fertile fields, fragrant meadows, vines and fruit orchards that line the way to Legrad.

    The Mur cycle path features many variations away from the beaten track.

    Mur cycle path between Frohnleiten and Graz

    Is one shore of the river Mur more beautiful than the other? Find out for yourself! Just like during the last stage between Slovenia and Croatia, you can also cycle along both shores of the river between Frohnleiten and Graz on the detour via Gratkorn. Just a short ride away from the cycle path, many local attractions are waiting for you.

    The cycle path’s architecture along both sides of the Mur is perfect for making a roundtrip of your tour. The Lurgrotte with its impressive stalactite cave and the open-air museum of Stübing are only two of the attractions located along this section of the Mur cycle path. Both of them are popular with tourists as well as locals.

    The Mur cycle path is dotted with countless opportunities for a short break or to spend the night. If you don’t want to plan your trip in advance, there are always plenty of options for spontaneous guests.

    Cycling accommodations along the Mur cycle path

    You can find more than 80 “Bett+Bike” (bed + bike) partners along the Mur cycle path. All of them carry the quality seal of the German Cyclist’s Association ADFC and are perfect for cyclists to spend a night or more there. The hotels and guesthouses feature secure bike racks and drying rooms for your clothes. What’s more, they offer a cyclists’ breakfast to charge your batteries for the day ahead. The staff can also help you out with tools or workshop contacts in case your bike is in need of minor repairs.

    Other attractions along the Mur

    Step back in time during a ride with the Mur Valley Railway in Murau. Back in the day, the steam train even carried Franz Joseph I of Austria. The best thing about it: Between June and September, you can take your bike onboard free of charge.

    The regional specialities served along the Mur cycle path range from haute cuisine to traditional dishes. At Vinofaktor Genussregal in Vogau at the start of the South Styrian Wine Road, you’re in for a culinary adventure. Get to know the region and its people during a stroll through the different rooms, or sample products at one of the picturesque stalls in the wine shop’s market hall.
