Herb trail of the senses, Pöllau

Starting with a meditative attunement with calming herbs, you follow the fragrant noses to particularly aromatic plants...
...from far-reaching views of the Pöllau Valley Nature Park and beyond to the sight of very special herbs, the trail also offers insights into the defence mechanisms of certain herbs.

The barefoot trail, which can also be explored with your eyes closed, is also a sensory experience. Whether it's herbal consecration or Hansel and Gretel, customs and fairy tales are not to be missed. Before the trail ends with a tricky puzzle, you can also lend a hand with the talc stone.

More information

Pöllau, Alpine herb garden Käfer

The Pöllau Valley Nature Park is located in the heart of Eastern Styria, the garden of Austria, approx. 60 km north-east of Graz and approx. 150 km south of Vienna

By car from Vienna
If you are driving from Vienna to Pöllau bei Hartberg, take the A2 towards Graz and drive about 110 kilometres until you reach the Hartberg exit. From there, follow the B54 in the direction of Pöllau.

By car from Graz
To get to Pöllau bei Hartberg from Graz, take the A2 motorway in the direction of Vienna. After about 30 kilometres, take the Gleisdorf West exit and then take the B54 towards Hartberg/Pöllau. Follow the B54 for about 25 kilometres until you reach Pöllau.

By car from Salzburg
To get to Pöllau bei Hartberg from Salzburg, take the A1 motorway towards Vienna. Drive about 110 kilometres to exit 109 (Salzburg junction). There change to the A9 motorway in the direction of Graz. At St. Michael, follow the S6 towards Kapfenberg. Continue on the S6 until the Krieglach exit. From there, take the B72 and then the L405 to Pöllau.

  • The starting point for this eventful circular trail is the Käfer family's alpine herb garden.
  • From there we head towards the "1000-m-Stüberl", where we have a marvellous view over the entire Pöllau Valley Nature Park and beyond (to the north you can see the Wechsel, to the south-east into Burgenland).
  • We follow the markings with the yellow dots - slightly uphill for approx. 900 metres - towards the transmitter until we reach the information board "Welcome to the nature park community of Rabenwald". Here, by the way, is a marvellous place to rest.
  • We then walk back a few metres and turn left at the signpost into the high forest and stalk along a narrow path past natural shrubs and herbs to the Leitenbauer weather cross, where we can enjoy the peace and quiet and relax.
  • We hike the short distance back to the junction, stay on our markings (yellow dots) and in a few minutes reach the so-called "Schwaigkreuz" at 1099 metres above sea level - also the highest point of our herb trail.
  • From here, the red-white-red hiking trail no. 922 leads to Pöllau. We follow this to the "Graf Lamberger Schwoag", continue along the forest path and then an asphalt road for approx. 500 metres until we reach a 180° bend.
  • Here our paths diverge, the 922 leads to Pöllau, but we continue to the right on the "Hierzberger Weg" until we reach the beautifully laid out Alpine herb garden just before our destination. You can visit this herb garden at almost any time of year, but it is advisable to book in advance.
The pure walking time is approx. 1 hour - depending on the time spent at the stations, a correspondingly longer time should be planned.
Timetables and travel information can be found at Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) or at Verkehrsauskunft Verbundlinie.
