From the RETTER Bio-Natur-Resort over the Pöllauberg to the summit cross of the Masenberg and then back again.

This hike is a wonderful opportunity for those with sporting ambitions and stamina to enjoy the marvellous viewpoints on the Pöllauberg into the Pöllau Valley Nature Park and far beyond, as well as at the summit cross and the Olmstoll. The view from the Masenberg extends from the Fischbach Alps - with Pretul and Stuhleck - to the Hochwechsel. With very good visibility, you can even see the Veitsch and Schneeberg. From the Olmstoll you can also see the Augustinian monastery of Vorau in Joglland.

Pöllauberg, Hotel Retter

The Pöllau Valley Nature Park is located in the heart of Eastern Styria, the garden of Austria, approx. 60 km north-east of Graz and approx. 150 km south of Vienna

By car from Vienna
If you are driving from Vienna to Pöllau bei Hartberg, take the A2 towards Graz and drive about 110 kilometres until you reach the Hartberg exit. From there, follow the B54 in the direction of Pöllau.

By car from Graz
To get to Pöllau bei Hartberg from Graz, take the A2 motorway in the direction of Vienna. After about 30 kilometres, take the Gleisdorf West exit and then take the B54 towards Hartberg/Pöllau. Follow the B54 for about 25 kilometres until you reach Pöllau.

By car from Salzburg
To get to Pöllau bei Hartberg from Salzburg, take the A1 motorway towards Vienna. Drive about 110 kilometres to exit 109 (Salzburg junction). There change to the A9 motorway in the direction of Graz. At St. Michael, follow the S6 towards Kapfenberg. Continue on the S6 until the Krieglach exit. From there, take the B72 and then the L405 to Pöllau.

We start at the RETTER Bio-Natur-Resort, cross the municipal road and walk past the quince orchards towards the Haubenwaller wine tavern.
After the Buschenschank's tarmac pitches, we follow the white-green-white markings along the edge of the forest steeply uphill.
We cross the village road and continue along the path, following the markings. After entering the forest path, we come to the Ölkreuz - then we keep left and walk straight ahead with a view of the pilgrimage church on the right.
We continue below the pilgrimage church along the Kogelweg to the car park above the Naturparkarena.
Here we keep right until we reach the crossroads with the chapel and the entrance to Pöllauberg.
Keep left at the chapel and walk approx. 200 metres along the L431 to the next crossroads with the signpost "Hartberg".
We continue uphill "towards Olmstoll", where we immediately come across a slightly hidden bench directly on the hiking trail and the red-white-red markings no. 942.
Keeping to the markings, we reach the Masenberg with summit cross, Glückskapelle chapel and Schutzwirt (SAM bus stop car park Schutzwirt HF 5843) after more than an hour.
For the return hike, we recommend the same route - on the red-white-red trail no. 942.
However, we now take the access road to the village of Pöllauberg (SAM bus stop Pöllauberg Ort: HF 5809) and visit the pilgrimage church.
From the church, we walk up the steps towards Pöllau and then keep left to reach the themed gardens "Frommer Garten", "Zimmer mit Aussicht" and the herb garden.
The latter takes us downhill into the forest until we pass the Ölkreuz again.We return to our starting point, the RETTER Bio-Natur-Resort (SAM stop: HF 5805), via the "Buschenschank Haubenwaller".
