James Morrison (AUS)
James Morrison is a virtuoso in every sense of the word. In addition to the trumpet, the multi-instrumentalist also plays the trombone, piano, saxophone and double bass. His international career developed quickly with a debut in the USA at the Monterey Jazz Festival at the age of sixteen. Performances at the world's major jazz festivals followed, including Montreux, North Sea, Nice and Hollywood Bowl, where he played with many legends of jazz - Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Ray Brown and Wynton Marsalis, to name but a few. Morrison is an associate professor at the University of South Australia and runs his own music academy. The career of 62-year-old James Morrison encompasses far more than just jazz: he is a pilot, rally driver, sailor, author and even an inventor.
Bigband Weiz
There are many big bands. But there is hardly one in this country that has been active for more than 40 years. It was in 1979 that Werner Gissing, who had a sensational first performance in Weiz with the newly founded big band. Numerous guest stars such as Billy Cobham, Vienna Clarinet Connection, Raphael Wressnig and many more have been presented since then. A milestone in the history of the Big Band Weiz was its participation in the "Billa Jazz Big Band Contest" in 1993, when the band was voted one of the ten best big bands in Austria by an international jury in Vienna. Since 2008, Christoph Pfeiffer, the long-time lead trumpeter of the Big Band Weiz, has taken over the leadership. He brings exciting ideas and verve, and the audience is carried away. A highlight in 2023 was the collaboration with Bill Laurance - a member of the 5-time Grammy Award-winning band Snarky Puppy. A new highlight is the concert in August 2024 as part of the Dixie & Swing Festival Weiz with James Morrison. Morrison has been on the guest wish list of Christoph Pfeiffer and the Big Band Weiz for many years.
