Circular hike, Birkfeld

Open
The Joglland circular route leads from Birkfeld to Zeiseleck in the east, the return route leads along the attractive gorge path along the Miesenbach with its numerous bridges.
The market town of Birkfeld connects the two regions of Joglland-Waldheimat and Almenland Nature Park in Eastern Styria and is located in the upper Feistritztal. The exposed location of the place was already described by Peter Rosegger: “And out in the lowlands, on a green hill, lies the stately Birkfeld”. In the town center you will find the historic Birkenstein Castle, which is inhabited by the Tacoli family, but it is possible to visit the castle courtyard. Birkfeld is also known as the home of the music group “Edlseer”, to whom the “Edlseer Homat hiking trail” is dedicated. Many guests reach the town via the Feistritztal cycle path or with the Feistritztalbahn. By hiking to Zeiseleck, located in the forest, you get to know the east of the municipality of Birkfeld, a beautiful landscape with well-kept cultivated areas and promising places. The way back leads over the “Klammweg” along the Miesenbach, which is very attractive for hiking thanks to numerous bridges, underpasses and crossings with ford stones. The path can be walked without major difficulties, but requires a bit of fitness due to its length.

Please check the refreshment options including opening times BEFORE you start your hike. Start: Birkfeld main square We start at the main square, walk past the church and along the sidewalk across the cemetery grounds down to the valley floor. We cross the pedestrian bridge and turn right onto Edlsee-Straße. At the large intersection we turn left towards “Hartberg/Pöllau”. Go over the Feistritz Bridge and then immediately turn right again. After a few meters we turn left into a side street and now go uphill. At the end of the asphalt road, at a crossroads, we keep right, uphill and along the path we come to a wood and stone construction. We follow the narrow path no. 3 continue uphill, we keep to the right at a wooden fence. We continue along the forest path to a rest area by the stream. We continue uphill along the edge of the forest, reach a farm and pass directly under the stable bridge. We walk along the asphalt road, past the “Am Sonnenhang” sign, to an intersection and keep right there. After about 900 meters we come to the next street intersection with a large wooden display board for pilgrims. We turn left and go up to Sonnleiten. Opposite the “Sonnleiten” town sign, we turn left onto the street and walk about 400 meters. We pass house number 53 and a little way across the meadow and then see the beginning of a forest path. Now we walk comfortably along the markings through the forest up to the Hahn horse farm. After the house we continue left on the asphalt road. After a few minutes we find a yellow signpost on the right (“Path No. 5”). The detour to the summit begins here.

We hike on trail no. 5 to an intersection where we keep right. Along “path no. We walk 15" over the Nandl Loch to the Zeiseleck summit cross (1,078 m) in the forest. To return we take the same path to the forest road and continue downhill to the right. We orientate ourselves on the markings through the forest and come to a beautiful meadow area with a view of the Wildwiesenwarte. We continue downhill along the gravel road and turn left at the intersection. We walk on the asphalt road to the houses in Hinterleiten. After the “Hinterleiten” sign, we continue slightly uphill, then we turn right downhill. We walk between the house and the stable and go downhill until the asphalt road ends after a few houses. We stay on the gravel road, which leads continuously downhill and directly meets the gorge path. From now on we can easily orientate ourselves through the gorge using the signs. After the town sign “Außeregg” we leave the road and continue along the gorge path. It goes uphill and downhill to the Klammweg exit. We now follow the road to Birkfeld and come back to the Feistritz Bridge in Gschaid and follow the path we already know back to the center of Birkfeld.

The Felber café-pastry shop in the town center is known for its cakes and tarts, and its chocolate specialties also come from its own factory.
