Footpath from Rattenberg to Fohnsdorf

A leisurely hike that connects Rattenberg with Fohnsdorf in the Murtal adventure region.

The small village of Rattenberg is a cadastral municipality of Fohnsdorf and lies on the northern edge of the largest inner-alpine basin in Styria, the Judenburg-Knittelfeld Basin. The name Rattenberg can be traced back to Rottenburg Castle, built in the 11th century, of which only a few remains can still be found. The footpath to Fohnsdorf is an easy hike on paved roads, with beautiful views of the Seetaler Alps. Likewise, the view of the slag heap on the former mining area accompanies you. Once you arrive in Fohnsdorf, you can extend the loop a bit by walking in the direction of the slag heap and taking the nature-history nature trail. At the main square in Fohnsdorf a hiking overview board is planned, which gives an overview of all hikes in and around Fohnsdorf in the adventure region Murtal.

From St. Michael in Upper Styria via the Murtal expressway S36 (subject to toll sticker) to the exit "Zeltweg-Ost". Then past the Red Bull Ring to Rattenberg (30 km, approx. 20 minutes).

From Judenburg via the Murtal expressway S36 (vignette required) to the exit "Judenburg-Ost" and via Fohnsdorf to Rattenberg (15 km, approx. 20 minutes).

From Gasthof Hotel Perschler (1), 702 m, in Rattenberg we walk about 300 meters in the direction of the village center, then turn left and follow the gravel road, which is led as an avenue over the meadows. Arrived in Sillweg (2), 736 m, we go right into the village center. Now we turn left and follow the road through the populated area. We always stay straight on the road, follow the red-white-red markings and enjoy the view of the Seetaler Alps along the way. In Fohnsdorf we have another small counter climb, shortly after we come to a crossroads where we turn left and reach the center or the starting point of the hikes in Fohnsdorf (3), 736m.

From the center of Fohnsdorf it is a 20 minute walk to the thermal baths or the mining museum.

Rattenberg is easy to reach by bus. The nearest train stations are Judenburg, Zeltweg and Knittelfeld.
