Things to know about the Wine Trail
About the Southern Styrian Wine Trail
For 70 years now, a scenic road has gently wound its way through the rolling hills of South Styria’s wine country. Established in 1955 to support local livelihoods, it soon became clear that this breathtaking landscape held far greater potential. Today, the South Styrian Wine Road is known as Austria’s oldest wine route, stretching approximately 25 kilometres from Ehrenhausen to Leutschach an der Weinstraße. At the time of its creation, one feature was truly unique: along certain sections, the road itself marks the border with Slovenia.
As the route was expanded, access to farms improved, and winegrowers began selling their produce directly from the farm or welcoming guests to enjoy a glass of wine on site. Over the years, the number of traditional wine taverns has grown steadily, shaping the region’s distinctive culinary culture.
Today, the Wine Road is especially popular with e-bike enthusiasts. Cycling through the vineyards is a truly unforgettable experience and has become an integral part of life in South Styria. Those who prefer to explore on foot can savour the tranquillity and natural beauty of the gentle hills — a place where every step reveals a little more of South Styria and leaves a lasting impression on both heart and soul.
