Adalbert Stifter, exemplary author of the Biedermeier period, for generations of grammar school pupils above all the creator of tranquil descriptions of nature with a sedative effect, is in truth a nerve-racking explorer of the depths of the human soul.
Philipp Hochmair proves this with the story "Der Hagestolz". The exceptional Austrian actor has a special gift for conveying world literature. His performances of Goethe's "Werther", Schiller's ballads and his version of Hofmannsthal's "Jedermann" guarantee sold-out houses. Blockbuster potential. Now he has taken on Stifter, and his interpretation has the potential to become the next blockbuster, as was evident at the first performance in the Gläserne Saal of the Musikverein. With three musicians, he leads us through a cleverly abridged version of the story of young Victor, who is taught the hardships of life by his uncle on a desert island. The opening is demonic when the darkened hall is filled with the off-key tones of a tuba. Hochmair shifts brilliantly between Stifter's characters. As the young man, he pulls out all the stops with a self-congratulatory undertone, then again with an almost tender, quivering voice. He portrays the uncle as an embittered, world-weary man. Even Alfred Hitchcock would probably have enjoyed the showdown between uncle and nephew, including a gigantic thunderstorm.
