A relaxing drive up the toll road to the mountain in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park in Upper Styria, followed by a leisurely, scenic hike with culinary breaks on the Schneealm Plateau, offering stunning views and the opportunity to enjoy local specialties along the way.

For this circular hike, you should come with a good appetite and a bit of fitness. The hike can be extended or shortened as desired, and the short summit section can be skipped (although this is not recommended).

Toll road from Urani Freizeitteich near Neuberg an der Mürz via Michlbauerhof to Schneealm.

Parking at the end of the toll road to Schneealm. Please be sure to follow the parking regulations!

From the parking lot at the end of the toll road, we first follow the forest road and then the alpine trail to the Schneealpenhaus, where we plan to take our first small break after about an hour of hiking.

From Schneealpenhaus, we descend briefly and then continue almost level on a wide path, slightly to the right, towards the organic dairy at Lurgbauer – here, of course, a cheese tasting is a must.

For the return journey, we first take the same path back as we did on the way out. Once the huts on the alpine plateau are in sight, we turn right and ascend the scenic Windberg summit.

Our next goal, the Michlbauerhütte, is visible below us from the summit, and we descend via a well-marked alpine trail.

After this final culinary break, we head back to the starting point.

Most hiking and mountain tours in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park are located in alpine terrain. For longer hikes and mountain tours, good physical condition, surefootedness, and a head for heights are strongly recommended.

On the high plateaus of Rax, Schneealm, and Veitsch, orientation can be difficult in fog or bad weather.

The described circular tour also partly follows alpine trails.

Packing your backpack properly makes hiking easier:

Pack heavy items first.
Keep your water bottle (ideally 1 liter or more) easily accessible.
Frequently used items like sunglasses, camera, phone, or map should be placed on top.
An emergency kit, including blister plasters, should be in every backpack, and layering ("onion principle") is always recommended!
Never forget rain protection for alpine tours!

For the described tour, good footwear is recommended.

After the culinary circular hike, a visit to the Neuberg Abbey with the Kaiserhof Glassworks and the small nature museum is highly recommended.
