Castle Pöllau

In the middle of Pöllau stands the present-day castle and former Augustinian canonry. In 1482, Hans von Neuberg, the then owner of the castle and the market of Pöllau, stipulated in his will that the castle should be converted into an Augustinian canonry after his death. The Pöllau canonry was finally founded 22 years later. In the same year, eight canons moved from the Vorau canonry to Pöllau under Provost Ulrich. Between 1677 and 1779, the canonry was rebuilt and expanded. The floor plan of the church and the mighty dome were modeled after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome - for this reason, the building is often colloquially referred to as the "Styrian St. Peter's."

However, the Pöllau canonry was dissolved six years later as part of the Josephinian reforms and handed over to the state. Nevertheless, the nearly 300-year activity of the canons made Pöllau the spiritual, cultural, and economic center of the Pöllau Valley. Today, the castle is owned by the market municipality of Pöllau. The parish church and the east wing belong to the Diocese of Graz-Seckau. It houses event facilities, such as a large and small fresco hall, refectory, seminar and exhibition rooms, the Pöllau-Vorau-Joglland music school, the rehearsal rooms of the renowned music chapel, as well as the tourist office and much more.

The Pöllau Castle with its courtyards can be viewed from the outside at any time; the interior rooms of Pöllau Castle can only be visited as part of a castle tour.
