Castle Pöllau
Pöllau
Journey into the past in the Nature Park Pöllau Valley and book a guided tour of the castle.
In the midst of Pöllau stands today’s castle and once the Augustinian canon’s monastery. In 1482, Hans von Neuberg, the then owner of the castle and the market of Pöllau, specified in his will to convert the castle into an Augustinian canon's monastery after his death. The Pöllau monastery was finally founded 22 years later. In the same year, eight canons moved from the Vorau monastery to Pöllau under the leadership of Provost Ulrich. Between 1677 and 1779, the monastery was remodeled and expanded. The floor plan of the church and the massive dome were modeled after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome - popularly, the building is often referred to as the "Styrian St. Peter's Basilica".
However, the Pöllau monastery was already dissolved six years later as part of the Josephinian reforms and transferred to the state. But the nearly 300 years of work of the canons made Pöllau the spiritual, cultural, and economic center of the Pöllau Valley. Today, the castle is owned by the market municipality of Pöllau. The parish church and the east wing belong to the Diocese of Graz-Seckau. It houses event venues such as a large and small fresco hall, refectory, seminar and exhibition rooms, the Pöllau-Vorau-Joglland music school, the rehearsal rooms of the renowned music band, as well as the tourism office, among others.
The Pöllau Castle with its courtyards can be visited outside at any time; the interiors of Pöllau Castle can only be viewed as part of a castle tour.
This location is also perfect for celebrations of all kinds. For appointment arrangements, please contact the market municipality of Pöllau directly.
"SAM" stands for "shared taxi East Styria" and fills the mobility gap where buses and trains do not operate. The SAM stop at the castle (north side) is HF 5943, you can find more stops here.
