Sporty, varied and full of contrasting landscapes: the 801 Municipal Circuit links Trofaiach, Vordernberg and St. Peter-Freienstein. Over a distance of around 40 kilometres, cycle paths and quiet side roads alternate with gravel and off-road sections.
The 801 Cycle Route takes you through the three founding communities of the cycling project – Trofaiach, Vordernberg and St. Peter-Freienstein. Covering around 40 kilometres with an elevation gain of approximately 670 metres, the route is aimed at experienced cyclists in good physical condition.
From Rötzgraben, the route climbs towards Hohe Rötz and then descends steeply to Vordernberg. Following the Eisenstraße Cycle Route R38, the route leads back to Trofaiach and on via Gimplach, Schardorf and Edling to Lake Trabocher. Passing through Hessenberg and St. Peter-Freienstein, the loop comes full circle back in Trofaiach.
The tour combines sporting challenges with peaceful stretches, as well as culture, nature and numerous places to stop for refreshments. In particular, the total distance and the steep, winding descent from the Hohe Rötz to Vordernberg require appropriate cycling technique and fitness.

More information

Details on how to get there can be found here.

The starting point is the Trofaiach-Rötz stadium. From here, the route leads through the Rötzgraben, past Styria’s oldest spruce tree, towards Hiaslegg. From the road, the route branches off to the left onto an old right-of-way towards Hohe Rötz and Vordernberg.

On the Hohe Rötz, you pass the former Rötzhube workshouse. This is followed by the challenging and steep descent to Vordernberg. In the village centre, the route joins the Eisenbundesstraße and heads towards Leoben. After the railway underpass, turn right onto the R38 Eisenstraßen cycle path. Following the former railway line, the route passes through Hafning and returns to Trofaiach. At the sports hall, the route turns right onto Gößgrabenstraße towards Kurzheim. There, it branches off to the left towards Gimplach and continues over the Putzenberg and past the Trofaiach golf course to Schardorf. Via Gausendorf and Edling, the route then heads to Lake Trabocher, which is circumnavigated anti-clockwise.

From the lake, the route leads over the Hessenberg to St. Peter-Freienstein. Following the former railway line, it heads back towards Trofaiach and then cuts straight through the town centre. Via the Roßmarkt, past the cemetery and the former Ost substation, the final section leads back to the Trofaiach-Rötz stadium. The steep descent from the Hohe Rötz to Vordernberg requires confident riding skills and particular care. This route should only be tackled on a mountain bike in perfect working order. Up-to-date information on disruptions and route closures can be found online at www.eisenwadl.at/tested
