Guided tour in the Hohlensteinhöhle
General Information
On the eastern slope of the Bürgeralpe, at an elevation of 1,031 m above sea level, is the show cave that was first mentioned in 1832.
In the Mariazell Hohlensteinhöhle, there is "Nix" to see. But Nix is much more than nothing! "Nix" is a typical wall decoration of caves in limestone, also known as mountain milk. Along with stalactites, sinter tubes, sinter flags, and sinter basins, these are typical limestone formations found in karst caves.
In the mood for a little cave adventure? Helmet, headlamp, warm clothing, non-slip shoes. It is cold – even in summer – it is damp, there is water, and it can be wet; it has a special atmosphere. You will experience absolute darkness for a brief moment, without residual light. You will experience the Hohlensteinhöhle with all your senses.
Enchanting light atmosphere: You will be amazed at the play of light and shapes that occurs when several people with headlamps explore the corridors and halls of the Hohlensteinhöhle, searching for the characteristic limestone formations in this underworld of the Limestone Alps.

Warm clothing that can get a little dirty.
The uneven ground, steps, and ladders require sure-footedness and appropriate shoes with good grip and a slip-resistant sole, in a word: preferably hiking shoes.
Definitely nothing with heels, please no flip-flops!

Club hut Hohlenstein Mariazellerland in the forest on the Bürgeralpe.
The hut is located at a crossroads of hiking trails leading to Bürgeralpe, Schertlerkreuz, Rechengraben, and Habertheuersattel.

Route 1: The Cozy - with the gondola up the mountain
Those who do not shy away from hiking in the rain will sometimes be rewarded with special lighting moods. You will cross this deforestation with its typical, grass-dominated clear-cut vegetation, among other things, when descending from Bürgeralpe to the association hut, but most likely not in the rain.

Route 2: The Middle - just a few altitude meters on foot to the observatory
If you want to start hiking at the Stehralm above Mariazell, you first drive your car exactly there. You then park on the right side at the Stehralm. The Stehralm is up there, where you can see the public observatory of Peter Eder and his Astroteam from the center of Mariazell, back, right above the basilica. One of the most modern public observatories in Austria. Definitely worth a visit as soon as it gets dark.

Route 3: The Longest - a few more altitude meters - the "Marterlweg"
Like the Middle, but without a car. So everything on foot, starting from the basilica. To the right of the Arzberger, you will see the signpost that shows you the way to the Stehralm. The crucifix group on the "Calvary Hill" and two Marterln testify to the traditionally deep-rooted faith in the region of Mariazellerland.

Important information
In the Hohlenstein cave, there are longer ladders, and a cave is a delicate ecosystem.
The Hohlenstein cave is even a cave that is home to bats. For these reasons, it is unfortunately not possible to take dogs into the cave. Remember to arrange for a dog sitter in good time.
