Guided Tour Rettenwand Cave
General Information
A magical realm underground!
The electrically lit stalactite cave with a developed visitor path is rich in stalactites and stalagmites, as well as sinter flags, pearl sinter, nodular, and button sinter.
The visitor enters the first larger hall after passing through the gate. Through the "Low Passage," they continue deeper into the mountain. A bear formed from gypsum in a side passage serves as a reminder that cave bears once inhabited the cave. Here you can also admire the first sinter formations like pearl sinter, sinter flags, and ceiling stalactites!
Via a stone staircase, visitors reach - past the "Jellyfish" - the "Great Dome," which resembles a Gothic cathedral. Here, visitors can marvel at mighty stalactites and stalagmites, the "Carillon," and the "Gothic Choir." The path now leads downwards under massive sinter bridges and past the "Capercaillie" to the "Broken Column."
The following part of the cave is particularly rich in stalactites and also contains pearl sinter, nodular, and button sinter. Here you will also find the "Chandelier" – the largest and most beautiful formation of the Rettenwand Cave.
Now the end of the guided tour, the "Collapse Hall" with the "Stone Lake," is soon reached.
On the way back, you can visit numerous finds in the small cave museum.

Equipment
In the cave, as well as on the way up, it is slippery - please wear sturdy footwear.
As we maintain a constant temperature of 8.5°C - we recommend bringing warm clothing even in summer.
Opening hours
Tours will take place until September 13, 2026, on Sundays & public holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the hour. No prior registration is necessary for these tours.
Groups of 10 or more can also book tours outside of these times.
Arrival information
By car...
The cave is located about 4 km outside Kapfenberg on the B 20 towards Mariazell (near the farm "Mariazellerstraße 135" in 8605 Kapfenberg). You leave the federal road at the PEWAG plant and park your vehicle there. You then reach the cave entrance on foot in about 20 minutes.
By public transport...
Since June 2024, our cave also has its own bus stop called "Rettenwandhöhle," which is served by regional bus lines between Kapfenberg, Aflenz, Turnau & Mariazell.
