A gravel-heavy alternative route to Tour 807 through the Tollinggraben, featuring a long, gradual climb, peaceful forest sections, and a high plateau with scenic views.

This more challenging alternative route to Tour 807 leads through the wooded Tollinggraben instead of the panoramic route. Especially in midsummer, the ascent—which runs mostly through the forest—offers pleasantly shaded sections.

Along the route are numerous points of cultural and historical interest, such as the former Tollinghof fortification, remnants of the former coking coal mining operations, the Freienstein castle complex, and Friedhofen Castle in St. Peter-Freienstein.

Shortly before reaching the high plateau, the alternative route rejoins Tour 807. After a short, steep climb on the Tollinghöhe, the high plateau offers a view across the Tollinggraben to the lowlands.

With a high proportion of gravel, longer climbs, and a short incline of up to 20%, this variant is intended for mountain bikers who are in good physical condition and have confident riding skills.

From the south – Graz:
Take the A9 Pyhrn Expressway toward Linz to the St. Michael interchange. Continue toward Leoben and take the B115 to St. Peter-Freienstein.

From the north – Liezen:
Take the A9 toward Graz to the Traboch exit. Continue on the B115 toward Trofaiach and St. Peter-Freienstein.

From the East – Vienna/Bruck an der Mur:
Take the S6 to Leoben, then take the B115 toward Trofaiach to St. Peter-Freienstein.

From the West – Judenburg/Murtal: Take the S36 toward St. Michael, continue toward Leoben, and take the B115 to St. Peter-Freienstein.

The starting point is the St. Peter-Freienstein municipal office. After crossing the railroad tracks, the route leads through the Schörglhof neighborhood near the industrial facilities toward Neuwerk in Donawitz.

After crossing the railroad tracks again, continue straight ahead at the roundabout into the Tollinggraben. On a gravel road that climbs gently at first, you’ll pass the historic Tollinghof, a former fortification.

The route then follows the Tollinggraben steadily uphill. This mostly forested section offers a pleasantly sheltered climb, especially on hot summer days.

Shortly before the high plateau, the alternative route rejoins Tour 807. A short, steep climb with a gradient of up to 20% leads up to the Tollinghöhe and on to the high plateau.

The descent follows an easily navigable gravel road through the Upper Tollinggraben. Passing the Freienstein Castle complex, the route leads back to St. Peter-Freienstein and to the starting point at the municipal office.

You should carry a basic set of tools and accessories on every mountain bike tour. This includes a spare inner tube and/or repair kit, wrenches, a pump, brake and shifter cables, and a screwdriver. A bike helmet, plenty of drinks, and clothing appropriate for the weather are also part of the basic gear.

On Route 807a, pay special attention to the high proportion of gravel as well as the short, steep climb up to the Tollinghöhe, which has a gradient of up to 20%. When descending, adjust your speed to the trail conditions and visibility.
