SkillThe tour in numbers
This stage of the Hiking Trail From Glacier to Wine leads through the heart of the Thermen- & Vulkanland region of Steiermark, taking hikers from the historic town of Fürstenfeld to Unterlamm, a charming village nestled within the rolling hills of the Vulkanland. Before setting off, it is well worth taking time to explore Fürstenfeld. The town's imposing fortifications and well-preserved sections of its historic town wall bear witness to an eventful past, while attractions such as the Pfeilburg Museum provide fascinating insights into the history of the region. Leaving the town behind, the route passes through the adjacent town forest before continuing via Dietersdorf and Bad Loipersdorf towards the famous thermal spa resort of the same name. Widely regarded as one of the most diverse thermal spa destinations in Europe, Loipersdorf Thermal Spa combines relaxation, wellness, and family-friendly attractions in a unique setting. The second part of the stage follows the extensive network of hiking trails that criss-cross the Vulkanland landscape. Rolling hills, forests, orchards, and small settlements characterise this particularly scenic section of southeastern Austria. Along the way, the Bird Trail offers an opportunity to learn more about the region's native woodland bird species and to test your knowledge of local wildlife through a series of informative stations. The stage concludes in Unterlamm, where those seeking tranquillity will find a peaceful atmosphere and several places associated with rest and reflection, including the village's natural pond and the Lourdes Grotto, both considered special places of calm within the Vulkanland landscape. Combining history, wellness, nature, and gentle countryside scenery, this stage perfectly reflects the diverse character of the Thermen- & Vulkanland region.
Around the Loipersdorf Thermal Spa, a network of themed walking routes known as the Paths of Life invites visitors to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with themselves.
These trails are designed to inspire movement as well as contemplation, encouraging walkers to step away from the demands of everyday life and pay attention once again to their own thoughts, feelings, and well-being. Set within the peaceful landscapes of the Thermen- & Vulkanland region, they offer opportunities for both physical activity and quiet reflection.
In this sense, the stage embodies a harmonious combination of body, mind, and soul, making it a particularly rewarding experience on the Hiking Trail From Glacier to Wine.

More information
Detailed information on how to get to Fürstenfeld can be found here.
This stage of the Hiking Trail From Glacier to Wine begins at the Graz Gate in Fürstenfeld, close to the municipal offices. From here, the route leads through the historic town centre via Augustinerplatz, Theatergasse, and the main square, before continuing along Mittergasse towards the outskirts of the town.
After crossing the main road, the trail follows Parkstraße and Bahnhofstraße, passing the railway station before turning into Jahnstraße and entering the Fürstenfeld Town Forest. This attractive woodland, with its mature trees and pleasant walking paths, provides a peaceful natural setting just beyond the town.
After approximately one kilometre through the forest, the route turns towards the village of Dietersdorf and continues on to Bad Loipersdorf. Quiet local roads and paths lead through the gently rolling landscape until the route joins the Thermenstraße, where sections of the beautifully designed Paths of Life guide hikers directly to the Loipersdorf Thermal Spa.
A short distance beyond the thermal spa, the route joins part of the Spiritual Path, a themed trail that normally leads from Kirchberg to Unterlamm and Loipersdorf. On the Hiking Trail From Glacier to Wine, however, this section is walked in the opposite direction.
Marked by the distinctive Handspur signs, the trail leaves the road and winds through beautiful woodland, small settlements, traditional farmsteads, and cultivated fields. Gradually, vineyards and orchards begin to appear, offering a foretaste of the landscapes that characterise the final stages of the route.
The stage concludes in Unterlamm, a peaceful village surrounded by the rolling hills of the Thermen- & Vulkanland region.
Tip for the following day: Start early and allow plenty of time, as the next stage leads to the magnificent Riegersburg, whose imposing hilltop fortress is one of the most impressive landmarks in all of Steiermark and well worth a visit.
