This cycling tour is one for true connoisseurs, starting in the historic old town of Hartberg, surrounded by vineyards, and leading right into the heart of the Thermen- & Vulkanland. Whether fine-dining restaurant or rustic Buschenschank, the Thermen- & Vulkanland offers tables full of delights – especially regional specialities. Among them are the savoury Vulcano ham and the hand-scooped Zotter chocolate. The crowning glory of these flavours is surely the pumpkin seed oil, with its unmistakable nutty taste.
In the Thermen- & Vulkanland, the springs of the six spa towns – Bad Radkersburg, Bad Gleichenberg, Bad Loipersdorf, Bad Blumau, Bad Waltersdorf, and Sebersdorf – bubble up powerfully from the earth. They rise from depths of up to 3,000 metres and reach temperatures of up to 110 °C. This soft, healing water provides warmth and wellbeing, radiates energy and vitality, and contributes to beauty, health, and inner balance.

We leave the town of Hartberg on the Thermen Cycle Path R12 towards St. Johann in der Haide. The first kilometres are marked by small villages and fields, still bearing witness to the strong presence of agriculture in Eastern Styria. Just before the 2-Thermenregion Bad Waltersdorf, in St. Magdalena, we turn onto the Magdalener Cycle Path R36, which leads us towards the H2O Therme. Only a little further on, the charming town of Bad Waltersdorf awaits, with its romantic spa gardens, healing spa, and a variety of leisure options.

Leaving Bad Waltersdorf – and with it the Oststeirische Römerweinstraße, which we also encounter on the stage from Graz to St. Ruprecht an der Raab – around ten kilometres further we reach perhaps the most famous spa town: Bad Blumau, home to the Rogner Bad Blumau spa. Designed by artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, it is a masterpiece of harmony between art and nature. After the spa, the cycle path leads us through the spa gardens into the town of Bad Blumau.

Passing through the village of Bierbaum an der Safen, we arrive in Fürstenfeld, where the impressive remains of the historic fortress walls are visible from afar. Make sure to allow time for a visit, as the town’s eventful history has left behind remarkable witnesses of the past, such as the Pfeilburg Museum. From there, the route continues through the municipal forest on the edge of town. Via Dietersdorf and Bad Loipersdorf we finally reach a climb that leads directly to the Loipersdorf spa. Having earned our relaxation at the spa, we can look forward to continuing the journey to Bad Radkersburg the following day.

In the Thermen- und Vulkanland region of Styria, Eastern Styia, and South and WestStyria, the GenussCard opens the door to over 200 excursion destinations when staying at one of the 160 or so GenussCard partner establishments. Many of these GenussCard destinations, ranging from culinary manufactories to bathing lakes and museums, are located directly on the Styrian Wine Country CycleTrail

Detailed information about arriving by ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) can be found at www.oebb.at or on the Verbundlinie Steiermark website www.busbahnbim.at

This stage is well connected to Vienna and Wiener Neustadt via the regional train 520, with the route passing directly by Hartberg railway station. Travelling from Graz, you can take the X30 express bus, which runs from Graz to Hartberg. The S3 rapid transit line, which runs through the Raabtal, connects the tour’s destination (from Fehring to the Loipersdorf spa via the Thermen Cycle Path) with Gleisdorf and Graz. From Gleisdorf, the S31 rapid transit line also provides a link to St. Ruprecht an der Raab, the starting point of the St. Ruprecht an der Raab – Hartberg stage. This makes it easy for short-stay visitors to split the Styrian Wine Country Cycling Route across several holidays.

With Verbundlinie’s BusBahnBim route planner app, planning your journey has never been easier: simply enter towns and/or addresses, stop names or points of interest to check all bus, train and tram connections in Austria. The app is available free of charge for smartphones – on Google Play and in the App Store

A new Park & Ride facility is available at Hartberg railway station. Further information can be found here.
