A scenic mountain hike from Präbichl via the Leobner Hütte and the Hirscheggsattel to the Polster. At the summit, an impressive panorama unfolds over the Eisenerz Alps, the Hochschwab region, and the surrounding mountains.
The hike to the Polster is one of the most scenic mountain hikes in the Präbichl area. From the starting point, the route first leads through the forest and across alpine pastures toward the Leobner Hütte. From the Leobner Hütte, the trail continues uphill to the Hirscheggsattel. Here, the landscape gradually opens up, revealing impressive views of the surrounding mountains. From the pass, the marked mountain trail continues up the slope to the Polster. Once you reach the summit, your climb is rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view. Particularly impressive are the views of the Eisenerzer Reichenstein, the Vordernberger Griesmauer, the Eisenerzer Alps, and the Hochschwab region. After a leisurely rest at the summit, the return trip follows the same path back to the Hirscheggsattel and the Leobner Hütte. From there, the trail descends again to the starting point at Präbichl.

More information
Coming from Leoben, take the B115 Eisen Straße via Trofaiach and Vordernberg toward Präbichl. Coming from Eisenerz, also follow the B115 to the Präbichl Pass summit. The starting point of the hike is located in the Präbichl/Laufstraße area. Parking is available in Präbichl, including at the Skiarena, the Präbichl train station, and near the ski lifts.
From the starting point at Präbichl, follow the marked hiking trail toward the Leobner Hütte. At first, the route leads steadily uphill through the forest and across alpine pastures. After about an hour and a half, you’ll reach the Leobner Hütte, located at 1,582 meters. From here, follow the signs toward Polster and Hirscheggsattel. The trail continues to climb, leading through increasingly alpine terrain to the Hirscheggsattel. From the saddle, head toward Polster and follow the marked mountain trail uphill along the slope. After the final ascent, you’ll reach the summit of the Polster at about 1,910 meters. This is a great spot for a long break to enjoy the impressive mountain panorama. The descent follows the same route. From the Polster summit, head back to the Hirscheggsattel, continue to the Leobner Hütte, and then descend to the starting point at Präbichl.
Sturdy hiking boots with good traction, weather-appropriate functional clothing, and rain and wind protection are recommended.
Your backpack should also include plenty of drinks and snacks, sunscreen, a hat, a first-aid kit, and a fully charged cell phone. Hiking poles can be particularly helpful during descents.
Due to the alpine location, you should check the current weather conditions before starting your hike.
Emergency number for mountain rescue while hiking: 140.
When reporting an emergency, provide answers to the six “W” questions if possible: What happened? How many people are injured?
Where did the accident occur? Provide GPS coordinates if possible.
Who is reporting the accident? Provide a callback number.
When did the accident happen?
What are the weather conditions at the accident site?
