From fried chicken to ostrich eggs

The Feinspitz Tour for culinary connoisseurs is an insider tip among leisurely cycling tours: the starting point for this tour is the 33-metre-high Kneipp, exercise and observation tower in Auffen, near Schneider's Backhendlwirt restaurant, which is widely known for its crispy fried chicken.

Enjoyment between the Großharter Naturteich pond and the 2-Thermenregion Bad Waltersdorf spa region

Starting from this exposed point, you set off – initially along the plateau – towards Bad Waltersdorf. As you cycle through Auffen, you will be tempted to stop off at Max Ertl's art forge, with its high-quality wrought ironwork, and the Janisch apiary, with its eight different types of honey.

After the village of Harras, the route now descends gently out of the valley towards Neustift. The magnificent Obermayerhofen ‘wedding castle’ can be seen from afar, and you arrive in Sebersdorf, where the Seidl wine tavern offers Styrian delicacies for your physical well-being and the studio of sculptor Rudi Pichler provides aesthetic enjoyment.

The journey continues at a leisurely pace to the H20 Hotel-Therme-Resort Sebersdorf, which promises bathing fun, happy children and thermal well-being.

Refreshed and in good spirits, the tour continues to the Piwetz mill with its fresh Styrian pumpkin seed oil and delicacies from the mill shop, before travelling along the thermal railway to the spa town of Bad Waltersdorf. Here you will find the Roman Stone Museum, the spa gardens with their flowers, fountain, pond and fragrant herb beds. The Gasthof Fischer and the award-winning Safenhof invite you to rest and refresh yourself.

From Bad Waltersdorf, the route is initially moderate and then becomes a little more challenging as it climbs towards Waltersdorfberg. Once back at altitude, you cycle leisurely to the Harter Naturteich, a true paradise for nature, bird and water lovers. Of course, there is also a culinary destination right by the lake: the Harter Teichschenke, run by the Wurzer family, offers wine tavern specialities from its own production and fruit juices for children.

A real insider tip is a walk around the lake – an educational trail provides information about the nature reserve and its special features.

Passing the ‘school sports village’ with its stilt huts, we head back towards the starting point, where we can get up close to the largest flightless birds on earth at the ostrich farm and enjoy the impressive kernel oil egg dish and many ostrich specialities at the Lindenwirt.

Pack your hunger, because on the Feinspitz tour no one has ever managed to get through with only one Schmankerl Genussrast...
