Rosenkogel over Sommerriedelweg

Open
This hike takes you along the sunny side of the Seckau Alps. A wonderful hike to the Rosenkogel in both summer and winter.
The Rosenkogel is an extremely popular summit in the Seckau Alps for hikers and snowshoe hikers. The ascent from St. Oswald is a sporting challenge with more than 1000 metres of altitude and is also less frequently used than the shorter ascent via the Roßbachgraben in the Gaal. On the descent, we recommend a detour to the listed Maria Loretto chapel (1817 m). This wooden chapel was rebuilt in 1935 after it burnt down due to a lightning strike. It is not known when the chapel was originally built. Nor is it known when the mule tracks from the Gaal via Maria Loretto into the Pölstal valley originated.

More information

From Judenburg via the B 114 in the direction of Hohentauern (20 km, approx. 20 minutes).

From Trieben an der Pyhrn motorway A 9 via the B114 towards Judenburg (30 km, approx. 30 minutes)

We start directly at the church in St. Oswald (1), 982 m, and follow the yellow signposts (Rosenkogel via Sommerriedlweg 3 h No. 01). We initially follow the tarmac road, which continues slightly uphill as a forest road. After a short time we come to the "Tenegger-Hof". Here we turn right, walk uphill along the road and soon see the start of the hiking trail on the right. From now on, we follow the wooden signs with the inscription "Rosenkogel" and the red-white-red markings. A steep section of the trail follows, which is accompanied by several Stations of the Cross. At the forest chapel (2), 1281 m, the path becomes somewhat flatter. During the ascent we pass several crossroads, whereby the hiking trail is clearly marked and signposted. During the ascent, we repeatedly come to clear or open wooded areas, so that the view becomes increasingly expansive. The views range from the Seetal Alps, the Gurktal Alps to the Wölzer Tauern, and the Lachtal valley with its wind turbines is also clearly visible. At the Rudersattel (3), 1546 m, follow the path to the right, which leads gently uphill over sections with great views. This path leads to a forest road that goes slightly downhill to the right. Here we simply cross the road and follow the path, the start of which is marked with a wooden sign "Rosenkogel". Now we alternate between forest tracks and paths until we finally reach the Rosenkogel at 1918 metres above sea level (
The descent via the Maria Loretto chapel is a nice alternative.
St. Oswald is connected to the public transport network and can be reached by bus. (From Judenburg approx. 40 minutes)

There are two car parks available. One is near the Wenischbach stream (east of the church) and the other is at the western entrance to the village. Both car parks are only a few minutes away from the church and the starting point.
