Culinary indulgence and pleasure go with the Murtal like bread goes with butter. A wide range of specialist products only available in our region are as irresistible as they are delightful.
Do you prefer to be pampered rather than doing the cooking yourself? The Murtal is packed with guesthouse inns, taverns and restaurants. What takes your fancy? A leisurely snack in a traditional atmosphere, a multi-course candelight dinner or hearty home-cooked fare? In the Murtal, all guests are excellently catered for. Unusual special offers are also on the menu. "Dinner & Crime" combines a gripping mystery production with exquisite food, while wine tastings with a professional guide offer a very special atmosphere. Sample the Middle Ages at a knight's banquet, or spend a few enjoyable hours over candelight and live music.
Our cosy guesthouse inns are run by hosts who still roll up their sleeves in the business, and may occasionally sit down with their guests to ask where they hail from.
Our "Gasthöfe" and "Gasthäuser" are usually family-run businesses: you might find one of your hosts in the kitchen while the other mans the bar, assisted by a son taking orders and serving meals. You'll feel right at home immediately. Here you still find regulars' tables, with people playing cards (a popular game in Austria is called "Schnapsen") or chatting about local happenings. Guesthouse inns are still places for people to meet up; your local tavern is where everyone congregates for food when a christening or a funeral is held. Traditional, regional delicacies are still often made here, freshly cooked using local products. And most importantly: people are at the heart of it all!
For special occasions, special moments and special memories, our restaurants are second to none.
Indulge yourself in the charming ambience of our establishments. Choose from among the Styrian and Austrian wines on offer, and enjoy classic dishes made with a fresh spin on them. The restaurants of the region are notable for their quality and their excellent price/quality ratio.
We in Upper Styria are often nicknamed the "beer folk". We might not make wines here, but we've got all the more local beers to make up for it.
But don't worry: we do have an excellent wine available ‒ a special "apple wine" produced in the region. Numerous regional delicacies are made by local businesses. High-quality, fresh, seasonal products always play a starring role in our cuisine. Thanks to the many producers that still market and sell their wares here, our gastronomers are able to indulge their guests with remarkable specialities.
