More information
From Vienna via the A2 southern motorway and the S6 Semmering expressway to the Kindberg exit. Here through the Stanzertal on the Schanzsattel state road L114 towards Fischbach onto the Schanz. From Graz via the Weizer federal road B72 to Birkfeld and from here via the Schanzsattel state road L114 to Fischbach and further towards Stanzertal up to the Schanz. From Linz/Salzburg/Munich via the Pyhrnautobahn A9 and the Semmering expressway S6 to the Kindberg exit. Continue as above. Further information: Alpengasthof Schanz
We start our hike on the Schanz at the Alpengasthof Schanz. From there we follow the Zentralalpenweg 02 and part of the Mariazell trail 06A towards Stanglalpe until we reach an important crossroads at the Walserkreuz. Here we take the turn-off to the left towards Stanglalpe (while the Zentralalpenweg continues to the right towards Alpl). The route is very well marked and it is almost impossible to get lost. After about 2 km we reach a charming alpine meadow with horses, crosses and shrines. After a relaxing rest at the Waldheimat-Schutzhaus Stanglalm, we make a short detour to the summit cross of the Stanglalpe and then hike the same route back to the Schanz.
Alternatively, you can also hike from the Stanglalpe in the direction of Mitterdorf into the Stanzertal valley. Here, trail no. 723 leads first and then trail no. 722 continues. Steeper forest paths alternate with flatter passages across clearings. There are beautiful views of Mitterdorf and the Mürztal valley. However, this trail is very demanding with an elevation gain of around 850 meters and does not lead us back to our starting point.
Timetables and travel information can be found at Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) or at Verkehrsauskunft Verbundlinie. For local transportation we recommend the SAM-Sammeltaxi Oststeiermark.
There are enough parking spaces at our hiking starting point - on the Schanz at the Alpengasthof Schanz.
