Martyrdom columns and the apse niches of the parish church | Meditative hike 1

Open
Meditative hike 1
Murau is known for its so-called martyrs' pillars. The name probably comes from the "Marterl", originally a depiction of the crucifixion. On the other hand, it was customary for the location of such pillars to indicate the boundary of the town's judicial district. The Martersäule was also referred to as a plague cross, as plague victims were also buried here outside the town.

The following columns can be seen on this walk:

  • St. Martin's Column, at the foot of the larch forest
  • Pillar of the Poor, at the driveway to Schwarzenberg Castle
  • Late Gothic pillar of light, in front of Murau's parish church
  • Crucifixion group in the second apse niche, near Murau's parish church
