Führung in der Schatzkammer und Votivsammlung
General Information
In the treasure chambers of the Mariazell Basilica, votive pictures, votive offerings, and miracle pictures from several centuries are presented. The connection of many believers, royal and princely houses, bishops, and cardinals is expressed in the exhibition.
They comprise the north and south treasure chambers, the galleries, the north and south balconies, as well as the west balcony.
The tour begins in the west balcony with an overview of the history of the pilgrimage to Mariazell. Through the north balcony, past chronologically arranged votive paintings from the 17th to the 20th century, you reach the north treasure chamber.
At the center of the north treasure chamber, the grand altar of the treasure chamber testifies to the close relationship with the House of Habsburg. Above the altar stands the image of Mary donated by King Louis of Hungary, the second grace image of Mariazell. The precious image, created around 1360, is attributed to the Sienese painter Andrea Vanni.
In the south balcony, votive offerings from the recent past are exhibited. The south treasure chamber - dedicated to the Mother of God as Queen of Heaven - was used as a vestment chamber until 1967. The carved Baroque boxes from the time of the establishment of the treasure chamber are still used today for the storage of liturgical garments.
