Führung durch das "Münster Neuberg" im Naturpark Müzer Oberland
General Information
The Münster Neuberg - Always an Experience
Not just for art connoisseurs, the impressive hall church - the Münster, colloquially known today as the "Cathedral in the Village" - is a remarkable building.
The church is dedicated to the Assumption and Coronation of Mary, like all Cistercian churches. When Duke Otto the Joyful intended to establish a monastery in 1327, he was supported by the Cistercians of the Heiligenkreuz monastery. Subsequently, the first Gothic unified hall church building in Austria was constructed over a period of 169 years.
Especially noteworthy is the cloister of the Münster (visits only possible with a guided tour), which is the only completely preserved Gothic cloister in Styria. The cloister, with its images of 38 abbots, is as worth seeing as the Renaissance high altar and the chapter house with the founder's crypt. Here rest the mortal remains of Duke Otto the Joyful and his family.
With the abolition of the monastery by Emperor Joseph II in 1786, a varied monastic life came to an end after 469 years.
