General Information
Enjoy relaxing days at a fly fishing course in Austria, in the Hochsteiermark, in the Nature and Landscape Protection Area of Mariazellerland, or in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park.
Welcome to the Salza, the river of grayling and bears, and the Mürz with its wild brook trout! Fish-rich waters, crystal clear and ecologically particularly valuable, provide fly fishers with fascinating and alluring insights into nature.
The name Pijawetz has stood for high training quality among guests from near and far for many years. We provide attentive and competent support. Over more than 40 years, we have pragmatically developed the Gebetsroither casting style and adapted it to current conditions. Our casting technique is easy to understand and gentle on the musculoskeletal system. Our strengths lie in consultation and expertise.
You will receive an introduction to:
- proper behavior at the water and careful handling of fish
- casting school and presentation techniques
- ABC of the fly fisher's basic equipment and knot knowledge
- entomology and successful patterns - ecological nature-oriented water construction and management

Process of Fly Fishing Course for Beginners 2 or 3 Days
Day 1: 9.00 a.m. Meeting point, casting practice on a well-maintained lawn, learning the simple basic cast with variations, .... and in between the probably best cardinal cuts in the world!
Day 2: 9.00 a.m. Meeting point, learning by doing! Review and application of what was learned the previous day, gaining practical experience in still water and in the afternoon in flowing water, practicing the roll cast and important presenting techniques, error analysis, cozy sitting together.....
Day 3: 9.00 a.m. Meeting point. Immediately off to the water. "Practice makes perfect". Different sections of the flowing water will be fished, water structures explained, insects shown, and practical tips shared.
Course objective: Independently catching a trout or a grayling with the fly rod you prepared yourself. First steps at the water and basic knowledge will give you confidence and form an important foundation for your future development.
Rental equipment
Rental equipment will be provided during the course.
You are welcome to borrow wading boots from us for a small rental fee.

Our tip: Do not buy equipment before your fly-fishing course, test and form your personal opinion during the course days. You will develop a good feel for products in a short time. We are happy to advise you regarding material, application, and usage possibilities. With the knowledge you acquire, you can make more targeted purchases after the course and save money. Our courses are not sales events.
Around: The beautiful landscape of Upper Styria and the crystal-clear water provide accompanying persons with the ideal environment to engage in sports or simply relax. Numerous cultural events also invite you to linger. At Franzbauer, you'll find the best Cardinal slices, and the house's game specialties come from its own hunting grounds. You can enjoy probably the most beautiful panoramic view at Gasthof Leitner. Many guests surely remember the "last little sip" in the Zirbenstube while sitting together comfortably for a long time. One has even "short-term" gotten himself fitted for his own leather pants at the Lederhosenschneiderei in Mariazell. The Gasthof Schäffer is known for its extraordinary culinary offerings, and in the monastery, you sleep in a special atmosphere.
Hospitality is highly valued among the numerous hosts in the region.
