Stage 02 From Glacier to Wine South Route Guttenberghaus - Rohrmoos
Characteristics
SkillThe tour in numbers
Ramsau am Dachstein and Schladming are among the largest and most renowned tourism destinations in Steiermark. Nestled against the southern face of the Dachstein massif, Ramsau am Dachstein stretches across a high plateau between 1,100 and 1,700 metres above sea level and has retained its distinctly rural and idyllic character. At the same time, it offers an almost endless range of outdoor activities. Ramsau is regarded as the cradle of via ferrata climbing, with 19 via ferrata routes, and is also home to one of the largest cross-country skiing centres in the Alpine region. Beyond its sporting attractions, the village is known for a distinctive way of life that evokes a sense of authenticity and tranquillity rarely found today.
The historic town of Schladming, meanwhile, has developed into one of Austria's leading tourism destinations. Internationally renowned sporting events such as the Alpentour Mountain Bike Trophy and the Nightrace in January have helped shape its reputation far beyond the borders of Austria. Combined with its vibrant town centre, modern infrastructure, and extensive range of year-round leisure activities, Schladming offers visitors an exceptional variety of experiences in the heart of the Alps.

Detailed information on how to get to can be found here.
At the beginning of this stage of the Hiking Trail From Glacier to Wine, we follow Trail 616, which descends steeply via the idyllic Lärchbodenalm (Tel. +43 3687 81743) to the high plateau of Ramsau am Dachstein. Throughout the descent, magnificent views accompany us, stretching across the plateau below and towards the Schladminger Tauern, which will become the setting for the coming stages of our journey.
Upon reaching the plateau, we turn right after passing the Hotel Feistererhof and continue across meadows and past beautifully situated farms and traditional houses towards the Eiskarlift, a small drag lift. Here, the trail turns left and leads directly into the centre of Ramsau am Dachstein.
The route then continues towards the ski jumping and cross-country skiing stadium, which hosts a FIS Nordic Combined World Cup event every December and welcomes many of the world's best Nordic athletes. Passing the western side of the ski jump, we begin a gentle ascent through shady woodland towards the Kulmberg.
The trail then leads to the organic Frienerhof Farm, known for its beautiful herb garden and idyllic location overlooking the Schladminger Tauern. From here, a pleasant descent brings us to the town of Schladming, which makes an ideal stopover or overnight destination. From Schladming, hikers can either continue on foot or use the hiking bus the following morning to reach the Hochwurzen Cable Car, which provides access to the heart of the Schladminger Tauern.
In Schladming, the route initially follows the Enns River before reaching the western end of the main square via Dachsteingasse. Here, it is time to exchange hiking boots for a leisurely stroll. Numerous cafés, restaurants, and shops invite visitors to linger and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the town. A visit to the Schladming Town Museum is also worthwhile, offering fascinating insights into the eventful history of this former mining and mountain town.
The trail then continues towards the entrance of the Talbachklamm Gorge, which connects Schladming with Rohrmoos. Popular with hikers, runners, cyclists, and locals alike, the gorge provides an attractive recreational area. After a short distance, however, we leave the gorge path and turn right to make the final ascent into the centre of Rohrmoos.
From here, beautiful views back across today's varied stage provide a fitting conclusion before the next stage leads us deep into the mountain world of the Schladminger Tauern.
