Heimschuher Round South No. 5

Open
A wonderful hike with a scenically varied route and refreshment stops to refuel.
The Heimschuher Basin, which was formed by the erosion of the Sulm River south of the Sausal, was a barren alluvial landscape in early times. It was hardly suitable for settlement activities, and so the first remains of settlement by the Illyrians can be found on the Königsberg to the west of the village. A ring wall and isolated tumuli indicate this. The Roman road that connected Flavia Solva with the provincial capital Virunum also led westwards along the southern edge of the Heimschuher basin. That is why today's parish church is not, as it seems, out of the way, but was built on the edge of this traffic route. Old wayside crosses and Roman-era burial grounds still mark the course of this road today. Its documented history began more than 1000 years ago when the German King Otto I (936 - 973) donated his possessions between Sulm and Laßnitz and from the Murebene to the Koralpe to the Archbishopric of Salzburg.

The Heimschuher Rundwanderweg Süd (Heimschuher circular hiking trail south) begins at the municipal office and runs eastwards through the Hartlieb oil mill farm, first along the Sulmtal cycle path R1. From the Waldhütter farm, the trail leads up through a forest path to Schönegg and continues along municipal paths to Sauberg. From there you descend into the Fahrenbach valley. After the bridge, walk along the stream for a while before turning left onto the municipal path up to the Valtlthoma Chapel. After crossing the provincial road, follow the signs on the municipal path through a scenically varied stretch over the Königsberg to the Koschak inn. From there you return to the starting point via the Sulmtal cycle path (R1).

Variant 5a: The connection Heimschuh - Nestelberg leads along the municipal path without major differences in altitude and allows for shortened variants of the hike. (See tour Heimschuher Runde Süd No. 5a)
