On this bike tour, you’ll set off from the historic town of Judenburg, ride through Weißkirchen to Obdach, then continue on to St. Wolfgang up to Schmelz in the Seetal Alps, and finally return to Judenburg via Seetaler Straße. Enjoy the scenery on this varied tour and rise to the challenge of the elevation gain.

This tour takes you from the historic town of Judenburg through Weißkirchen to Obdach. For most of the way, you’ll be riding safely along the R26 Zirbenland Cycle Route. From Obdach, the route climbs several hundred meters to St. Wolfgang, a very quiet and idyllic spot. From there, a gravel road leads you on to Schmelz in the Seetal Alps, where you’ll then follow a road back to Judenburg.

The tour starts in the Judenburg area in the Murtal valley. At the beginning, you’ll ease into the ride on asphalt, mostly on a gentle incline heading north or northwest. Perfect for warming up before things get serious. Ride down the bridge in Judenburg and keep right toward Liechtenstein Castle, continuing on toward Maria Buch and Weißkirchen. At the Weißkirchen roundabout, take the first exit toward Eppenstein and Obdach. After a flat start, the route gradually gets steeper. The climb toward Obdach is steady but challenging. Here you’ll already gain most of the initial elevation.

From Obdach, starting at the Obdach market square, head toward St. Wolfgang and Rieseralm. Here, the trail begins to climb more steadily. Pace yourself! At the fork between Rieser Alm and St. Wolfgang, take the right path toward St. Wolfgang. At the fork in St. Wolfgang, take the left path. Now comes the final but most strenuous climb along the Schmelzweg to Schmelz. After a while, you can choose between the Schmelzstraße and the Untere Schmelzstraße. We recommend the Untere Schmelzstraße. Once you arrive at Schmelz, it might be time for a snack at the Schmelzhütte. Alternatively, with a further climb, you can also choose the path to the Winterleitenhütte and the lower Winterleitensee, stop here, and enjoy the beautiful lake (note: this detour is not marked on our tour map).

The way back to Judenburg is via the wide Seetaler Straße; you can simply follow it without getting lost.

When you leave the train station, keep left and cycle along Bahnhofstraße until you reach Gußstahlwerkstraße, where, after a few meters, you turn diagonally left onto Sensenwerkgasse. Passing the Gasthof Hotel Murblick and crossing the Mur Bridge, you’ll arrive directly at the Murradweg.
