The hike begins at the Bad Aussee train station (station 1) and leads a short distance on the Koppenstraße to the railroad crossing. Follow the gravel road straight ahead along the Traun River, past the barrage and the sewage treatment plant. Continue on the marked hiking trail over the footbridge (station 2) and the Koppentraun.
You hike uphill into the district of Sarstein and walk a short distance on an access road. Then turn left, reach station 3 and continue the hike on the road. Passing farmsteads, you follow the path on a gravel road through the forest until you reach station 4.
After a descent of about 200 meters, you will reach a trail that branches off to the left. Continue descending on this trail until you reach the suspension bridge over the Koppentraun River and thus station 5. From now on you follow the hiking trail for about six kilometers through the Koppental valley on the former railroad road. This was partly torn away by a flood in 1897 and replaced by a new and higher route. In the snow ditch, station 6, information is provided about the violence of avalanches. At station 7 you reach one of the numerous lucky places in the Ausseerland Salzkammergut, and at station 8 you are already in Upper Austria. Here is told about the wood drift on the Koppentraun. A short distance further you reach a chapel on the left. After this, the hiking trail also becomes a bike path, so be a little careful here!
Now you reach station 9 and continue through the old railroad tunnel to station 10. Now you have the choice:One can either hike from the left to the Koppenbrüllerhöhle, station 11, descend via the hiking trail and reach the Koppenrast, or one goes right over the bridge, further along the bike path, and then goes left again over the Traunbrücke to the Koppenrast.
The way back can be made by cab or by train - stop Koppenrast.
