This mountain is one of the heighest peaks in the Niederen Tauern. It is one of the most popular ski touring destinations in the Eastern Alps. The Preber is a rewarding peak throughout the winter, but the firn tours in spring are particularly enjoyable. The tour is also considered the region's guiding trail around the mountain personality Preber and symbolizes one of the 8 guiding offers on the subject of hiking in the Murau adventure area.
The ascent is from the Prebersee north on the marked summer trail to the Prodingeralm, then continue over a wooded escarpment to the Preber-Halterhütte (1.862m) and o ver the southern slope to the Roßscharte. Along the ridge to the summit. The descent follows the ascent track to the Prodingeralm, then via a goods road to the west and via the Eberlalm back to the Prebersee.

Coming from Judenburg via Unzmarkt to Scheifling. Here turn right in the direction of Murau. In Murau at the double traffic circle turn right towards Ranten. In Seebach turn right towards Krakau. In Krakau keep left and drive to the Prebersee.
From the Prebersee, the tour leads towards the Prodingeralm and on to the Preber-Halterhütte. Now it goes only on open terrain towards the summit cross. The descent is the ascent route.
