Southern Styria is characterised by its valuable natural and cultural landscape and has not only developed into a popular place to live and work in recent decades, but has also gained an excellent reputation as a tourist destination. The continuous population growth takes place primarily along the economically important infrastructural backbone of Graz, Leibnitz and Spielfeld.
Industry, manufacturing (especially around the core area of Leibnitz) and agriculture are of great importance in the region. Particularly in the south of the region, the special climatic conditions favour winegrowing, which is also reflected in the cultural landscape with its characteristic vineyards, contributing significantly to the potential for tourism. Thus, wine is also considered the region's flagship product. The Nature Park of Southern Styria with its unique landscape forms and safeguards the natural and cultural space, and also the living space of its inhabitants. This landscape is home to many special and innovative wineries, commercial enterprises, excellent restaurants and wine taverns, as well as accommodation facilities with authentic hosts.
The "Südsteiermark" brand is designed as an umbrella brand and serves as a regional mark of origin. The regional brand presents the origin of its bearers from southern Styria and makes them recognisable under a uniform sign. It supports the positioning of the region along the core values and statements, and serves to communicate southern Styria uniformly within the entire region and in all target markets. The southern Styrian regional brand serves as a broadly effective identification for all local businesses and institutions from different sectors. With the aim of attracting extensive attention to the region, its values and offers, it promotes the region and its positioning as a recreational, residential and economic area. Regional businesses that distinguish themselves through high-quality and regionally produced products also have the opportunity to have individual products distinguished through the quality brand "Südsteiermark Qualität" (Southern Styrian Quality).

The association "Marke Südsteiermark", based in the district of Leibnitz, aims to preserve an environmentally sound and liveable cultural and natural landscape by networking tourism, agriculture and forestry, business and culture, and to strengthen the region's economy by promoting cross-sectoral cooperation under the umbrella of the southern Styrian brand.
In the LEADER project "Marke Südsteiermark - regional brand and brand partnerships", the integrative umbrella and regional brand of southern Styria is being developed further and positioned in such a way that a common external image of the region as well as its contents, values and strengths are conveyed, and the existing potential can be fully exploited. In addition, the implementation of a quality brand for Southern Styria is to make a significant contribution to the networking of various sectors (business, tourism, agriculture) and to create added value for regional businesses as well as for the entire region. The project is supported with funds from the federal government, the province of Styria and the European Union (LEADER).
