Did you know?
Ever wondered where the name Buschenschank comes from? Traditionally, a Buschen — a bundle of green branches — was hung outside the house to let visitors know that the winemaker’s own wine was being served. This tradition gave the Buschenschank its name.
What is a Buschenschank?
A Buschenschank is much more than a place to stop for food and wine — it is a living part of South Styrian tradition. Its roots date back to 1784, when Emperor Joseph II permitted farmers and winegrowers to serve and sell their own produce. To this day, a genuine Buschenschank follows a number of clearly defined traditions and rules:
- Not every winery is a Buschenschank: A Buschenschank is a special form of direct farm sales and may only operate under specific legal requirements.
- Truly regional: Behind every Buschenschank are winegrowers who produce their own products with passion and care.
- Home-produced drinks: Wine, juices, cider and fruit brandies served at a Buschenschank come from the producer’s own farm.
- Traditional cold dishes: Expect regional platters, cheeses, meat and sausage specialities, spreads, homemade bread and sweet pastries.
- No hot meals or coffee: Neither is traditionally served at a genuine Buschenschank.
- A protected tradition: The term Buschenschank is legally protected and may only be used by establishments that meet the requirements of the Styrian Buschenschank Act.
