Discover the picturesque landscape and unique cuisine around St. Nikolai im Sausal.
The journey begins in the heart of St. Nikolai im Sausal. The route takes us along the municipal road and through shady forest paths to Mitteregg. Passing cosy wine taverns, where the scent of fresh wine hangs in the air, we reach the Sausal Wine Route. Here we are rewarded with a magnificent panorama that invigorates the senses and fills the heart with joy. After a short walk of about 300 metres, the path leads us downhill via Kerschegg and Genseberg to the picturesque Waldschacher ponds. After the ascent to the Waldschacher chapel, the path finally takes us back to the starting point via the old path.

Coming from Graz via the A9, take the Leibnitz exit. Follow the B74 to Kaindorf a. d. Sulm – Muggenau junction – St. Nikolai i. S.
Starting from the centre of St. Nikolai im Sausal, the route leads along the municipal road and along forest paths to Mitteregg. Passing wine taverns, you reach the Sausal Wine Road. Here you are rewarded for your efforts with a magnificent panorama. After about 300 m, the trail leads downhill via Kerschegg - Genseberg - down to the Waldschach ponds and then ascends to the Waldschach chapel and via the old trail back to the starting point.
Take the opportunity to book a wine tasting at a winery along the way or visit the Aeijst distillery.
Many starting points for our hikes in southern Styria can also be reached by public transport.
For a relaxed and sustainable journey, we recommend travelling by bus and train wherever possible.
