Mariazell Pilgrimage Route 06
Characteristics
SkillThe tour in numbers
The Mariazell Pilgrimage Route through Steiermark is one of the most significant pilgrimage routes in the Alps and a classic long-distance hiking trail, leading through completely diverse landscapes across 11 daily stages:
- The forests and vineyards of Südsteiermark
- The cultural region around Graz
- The alpine pastures around the Naturpark Almenland
- The high-alpine mountain world of the Naturpark Mürzer Oberland
Enjoyment & Culinary Delights: The first stages lead through Southern Styria – home of Schilcher wine. Traditional Buschenschänken invite you to linger, turning the trail into a culinary experience as well.
Art & Culture: With Graz, one of Austria’s most exciting cities lies directly along the route. Highlights such as the historic old town and Schloss Eggenberg provide cultural variety along the long-distance hike.
Alpine Pastures & Mountains: From the Almenland Nature Park onwards, the landscape changes: wide alpine pastures, forests, and higher elevations characterise the second half of the Mariazell Trail.
From the Schanz above Fischbach, the trail splits:
- Variant A – sporty & alpine: via Mitterdorf im Mürztal and the Hohe Veitsch – more demanding, with alpine sections and impressive mountain scenery.
- Variant B – gentle & cultural: through the Waldheimat of Peter Rosegger – quieter, culturally shaped, and rich in varied landscapes.
