    Winter sports in  Graz Region

    Snow and ice are no reason to stay indoors! After all, it’s lovely outside when the snowflakes are gently falling from the sky and the world is covered by a white blanket.

    So put on your warm jacket and snow boots, grab your scarf, gloves and woolly hat and off you go! If you’re looking for a more action-fuelled alternative to winter hiking or walking, why not try ice skating, ice stock shooting, skiing or sledging? The region of Graz is full of winter thrills and spills!

    Away from the hustle and bustle, the ski resorts of Graz Region offer a relaxed skiing experience. The number of slopes and lifts may not be as high as in other resorts – but the same is true for the ski pass prices! 


    The ski resorts around Graz offer snow fun in a charming atmosphere and stunning nature. Most locals learned how to ski on the mountains surrounding Graz. Even world-class athletes such as Austrian national team member Conny Hütter or Olympic snowboard medallist Marion Kreiner started their “snow career” at the local ski resorts.


    The “ski experts” are located in the west of Graz Region.

    You can also go skiing in the immediate surroundings of Graz, for instance at the family ski lift in the centre of St. Radegund or at Wimmer lift in Eggersdorf.

    Glide across the ice or pirouette in time with the music. Whether you’re a beginner or pro: Ice skating in Graz is a magical experience for everyone. You can find perfectly groomed ice surfaces at the local indoor and outdoor ice rinks or enjoy the natural ice on the region’s ponds and lakes.

    Exercise out in fresh winter air, surrounded by stunning nature – for instance during cross-country skiing – is good for your body and soul. Older locals might remember the winter when the city centre of Graz turned into one big cross-country ski trail.


    However, lovers of the Nordic sport usually head to the west of Graz Region, for their dose of cross-country bliss.

    Rent a pair of snowshoes and hike through snow-covered landscapes! And don’t forget to drop by at one of the region’s mountain huts for some splendid views and delicious local treats – simply delightful!

    Stubalm, Plankogel, Gaberl, Altes Almhaus, Rappold and Speikkogel all offer some excellent high-altitude hikes. Expect picturesque winter landscapes, breathtaking mountain views and heartfelt hospitality!
