Experience history in style on the Chapel Trail in Wies—a picturesque hike that begins at the historic pilgrimage church “Zum gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies” and leads you along idyllic roads and through enchanting forests to impressive chapels.

This hiking trail takes visitors on a journey into the past of art. The vaulted ceiling of St. Veit Chapel houses a unique art-historical monument: an almost continuous expanse of Gothic frescoes dating from around 1400 AD, covering an area of 127 square meters. The Chapel Trail begins at the market square in Wies and leads upstream along Sulmweg to St. Veit Chapel. The route continues to Federal Highway 76, then heads toward Vordersdorf and on to Eibiswald before returning to the market square in Wies.

Coming from Graz via the A9, take the A2 toward Klagenfurt at the Graz-West interchange. Take the Lieboch exit and follow the B76 toward Lannach-Deutschlandsberg-Hollenegg-Wies.

Vom Marktplatz gehen wir in Richtung Sulmweg flussaufwärts bis zur St. Veit Kapelle und weiter zur Bundesstraße 76. Diese unterqueren wir und folgen bis nach Vordersdorf der Beschilderung des Emmausweges. Ein Abstecher links führt zu den Hügelgräbern im Wald. Danach kommen wir zum Gehöft Kiefer vlg. Fuchs und halten uns beim Wegkreuz links bis zur Hermann-Kapelle. Dort gehen wir weiter zum Gehöft Lukas vlg. Michariapl bis zur Höhenstraße und kommen zur Buschenschank Körbisch vlg. Gartenbauer und zum Gasthof Safran vlg. Filatsch. Wir folgen kurz der Beschilderung 506 und kommen am „Mariazellerkreuz“ vorbei. Wir erreichen die Bundesstraße 76, queren diese über die Gehbrücke und wandern auf der „Alten Straße“ zurück nach Wies.

What makes this chapel trail special, however, is the St. Veit Chapel in Altenmarkt and the parish church “Zum Gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies.” Built in the Rococo style, it is the masterpiece of the brothers Johann Baptist and Dominikus Zimmermann. The church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.

Many starting points for our hikes in southern Styria can also be reached by public transport.
