A winter wonderland: a perfect snowshoe hike for beginners, with a stop for refreshments in the snow-covered Hebalm area.

We set off from the Rehbockhütte inn and head east towards the Freiländer-Alm. We walk past the Freiländerhütte (closed) on the left until we reach the edge of the forest and, shortly afterwards, the junction of hiking trails 35 and 551. We follow the yellow signposts towards Reinischkogel and continue straight ahead. After a short descent, we leave the marked hiking trail and follow the forest road, which takes a sharp right-hand bend. At a large clearing, east of the Schwarzkogel (1,550 m), red-white-red markings reappear. We head towards the wind farm and pass a wind turbine on the right – watch out for falling ice! After a short while, we leave the road and turn right, following the hiking trail through the impressive landscape of the Filzmoos until we reach the huts of the Freiländer-Alm. The return route takes us past the Freiländerhütte, along the familiar path back to the starting point of the hike.

Coming from Graz via the A9, take the A2 towards Klagenfurt at the Graz-West motorway junction. Take the Lieboch exit and follow the B76 towards Lannach-Deutschlandsberg.

Wir starten beim Gasthaus Rehbockhütte und wandern in Richtung Osten zur Freiländer-Alm. Bei der Freiländerhütte gehen wir links vorbei, bis wir den Waldrand und kurz darauf die Kreuzung der Wanderwege 35 und 551 erreichen. Wir orientieren uns an den gelben Wegweisern in Richtung Reinischkogel und gehen weiter geradeaus. Nach wenigen Höhenmetern bergab verlassen wir den markierten Wanderweg und folgen der Forststraße, die eine scharfe Rechtskurve macht. Bei einer großen Lichtung, östlich des Schwarzkogels (1550 m), sind wieder rot-weiß-rote Markierungen zu sehen. Wir gehen in Richtung Windpark und kommen rechts bei einem Windrad vorbei – Vorsicht bei Eiswurf! Nach kurzer Zeit verlassen wir die Straße und gehen rechts entlang des Wanderweges durch die beeindruckende Landschaft des Filzmooses, bis wir die Hütten der Freiländer-Alm erreichen. Der Rückweg führt an der Freiländerhütte vorbei, auf der uns bereits bekannten Wegstrecke bis zum Ausgangspunkt der Wanderung.

Enjoy the viewpoints on your way to the Freiländeralm – there are some beautiful panoramic views, particularly of the rolling hills and the hilly countryside of southern and western Styria.

Many starting points for our hikes in southern Styria can also be reached by public transport.

For a relaxed and sustainable journey, we recommend travelling by bus and train wherever possible. Depending on the region, additional local transport options are available.
