The Hochmoorweg is a loop trail that offers beautiful views and winds through peaceful forests and alpine pastures. You’ll pass through the Garanaser Hochmoor! If you’d like, you can grab a bite to eat either at the start of the hike at the Schmuckbauerwirt inn or along the way, where the Schirchler and Brendl alpine huts are perfect for a quick stop and a break.
The starting point is at the Schmuckbauerwirt inn. Follow hiking trail 591, which offers magnificent views over the Sulm Valley all the way to the Slovenian border. After about 2.5 km, you’ll reach the “Maxlippisäge” and, shortly after, the Garanser high moor, which has formed on a gentle hilltop. From a viewing platform, you can take in the expanse of the high moor. This health miracle lies at approximately 1,300 meters above sea level and has long been utilized at the Schwanberg therapeutic moor bath. You’ll also find a moor deposit in the area around the Schirchlerhütte. The tour continues along hiking trail no. 591 to the Schwanberger Brendlhütte. Via hiking trail no. 587, along the forest road, you reach the former Liechtenstein Sawmill from the Brendlhütte. The route continues along the municipal road back to the starting point, the Schmuckbauerwirt Inn.

More information

Coming from Graz via the A9, take the A2 toward Klagenfurt at the Graz-West interchange.
Take the Lieboch exit and follow the B76 toward Lannach-Deutschlandsberg until you reach Bad Schwanberg. At the traffic light intersection, turn right through the town and continue toward St. Anna-Schmuckbauerwirt.

The observation tower near the Garanas raised bog is the perfect spot for a short break. The Garanas raised bog is the highest therapeutic bog in Austria.
