A hike from Stainz to St. Josef - from the Flascherlzug to the theater village.

Start at the Stainzer Flascherlzug train station and follow the yellow signs to Fuggaberg/St. Josef. On the way, you will pass the Calvary Chapel and reach the Hofwald forest. Follow the path to Ettendorf and enjoy the panoramic view from the Jürgen Chapel. In the village center, turn left and walk past the pond and Zirknitzbach stream. Follow the municipal road to the Ettendorf fire station in Kummerdorf, where you meet the Stainztal circular trail. After a slight ascent and a left-hand bend, turn right into the forest. Cross the Fuggabach stream and hike up the Fuggaberg to the Resch chapel and on to the Leitenbauer chapel. You come to a prominent road and hiking trail junction. Our hiking trail no. 17 meets the theater hiking trail to St. Josef or Oisnitz Bhf here, which is why we now keep to the existing theater hiking trail markings (blue or yellow directional arrow with red mask). From the Leitenbauerkapelle chapel, hiking trail 17A branches off to the left towards Schlieb on the B76. This path runs largely flat along the ridge through a wooded area.

Coming from Graz via the A9, at the Graz-West junction take the A2 towards Klagenfurt. Take the Lieboch exit and follow the B76 towards Lannach-Deutschlandsberg.

Wir starten am Bahnhof Stainz (Museumsbahn „Flascherlzug“) und halten uns an die gelbe Beschilderung Fuggaberg/St.Josef mit der Wegnummer 17. Gleich hinter Stainz bestaunen uns neugierig Alpakas, seltene Schweinerassen u.a. in natürlicher Umgebung („Samahof“). Wir wandern südlich der Kalvarienbergkapelle (besuchenswerter Kalvarienberg im schattigen Laubwald) vorbei zum Hofwald. Beim Bildstock (Wanderwegkreuzung) zweigen wir rechts nach Ettendorf ab. Bald erreichen wir am Hügelkamm die Jürgenkapelle (Georgikapelle), einen historischen Kult- und Kraftplatz (informative Schautafel) mit Rastbänken und Panoramablick. Noch oberhalb des Dorfzentrums biegen wir links in einen Wiesenweg ab, gehen den Hang hinunter vorbei an einem Hobbyteich und gleich über den Zirknitzbach. Nun halten wir uns rechts und wandern gut 1 km auf der verkehrsarmen Gemeindestraße. Beim Rüsthaus der FF Ettendorf in Kummerdorf (Name nur mehr in alten Karten) treffen wir auf den Stainztal Rundweg, gehen aber geradeaus weiter. Nach leichtem Anstieg biegen wir in einer starken Linkskurve rechts in den Wald ab. Nach Überqueren des Fuggabacherls geht es hinauf auf den Fuggaberg* zur Reschkapelle und weiter zur Leitenbauerkapelle, einem markanten Straßen– und Wanderwegknotenpunkt. Unser Wanderweg Nr.17 trifft hier auf den Theaterwanderweg nach St. Josef bzw. Oisnitz Bhf, weshalb wir uns ab nun an die bestehende Theaterwanderwegmarkierung (blauer bzw. gelber Richtungspfeil mit roter Maske) halten. Von der Leitenbauerkapelle zweigt links der Wanderweg 17A nach Schlieb an der B76 ab. Dieser Weg verläuft weitgehend eben am Hügelkamm durch ein Waldstück.

Auf dem „Theaterwanderweg“ nähern wir uns „sichtbar“ unserem Ziel, dem malerischen Ort Theaterdorf St. Josef. Bei Catering Karoline Neumann biegen wir von der Straße in einen längeren Wiesenweg links ab. Nach Querung der Landesstraße geht es hinauf nach St. Josef. An der Dorfstraße angelangt kann man entweder links (blauer Richtungspfeil, rote Maske) nach Oisnitz Bhf. (GKB-Bahn) weiterwandern oder rechts in das Ortszentrum von St. Josef hineingehen. Beim Gemeindeamt St. Josef (Wanderweg-Infotafel) haben wir unser Ziel erreicht.

*) Fuggaberg: Der sanfte Hügelzug mit saftigen Streuobstwiesen und wunderbaren Ausblicken bildet die natürliche Grenze zwischen Stainz und St.Josef.
