This family-friendly hike begins at the parish church of “Maria im Dorn” in Eibiswald, which has Romanesque origins, a Gothic structure, and a Baroque renovation.

The Emmaus Trail is characterized by flat to gently ascending terrain. You’ll mainly hike on forest and meadow paths, with only occasional stretches on paved roads. Passing the Eibiswald long-distance hiking marker on your right, you’ll cross the main road and make your way leisurely through the Stille Tal valley, following the purple wine glass marker via Pörbach to Wernersdorf. From here, the well-marked Emmaus Trail leads you toward Wies, past burial mounds, then along a meadow and forest path, following the Mariazeller Trail, past the stately Aichberger farm. From there, you can already see Eibiswald. You descend into the Saggau Valley, cross the bridge, and return to the starting point.

Coming from Graz via the A9, take the A2 toward Klagenfurt at the Graz-West interchange. Take the Lieboch exit and follow the B76 toward Lannach-Deutschlandsberg-Bad Schwanberg-Wies-Eibiswald.

Ab der Pfarrkirche „Maria im Dorn“ gehen wir über den Markt Eibiswald, vorbei an der Mariensäule, zur Kreuzkirche, deren Entstehung wahrscheinlich ins 13. Jahrhundert zurück geht. Rechts vorbei am Weitwanderstein Eibiswald, über die Bundesstraße pilgern wir gemütlich durchs Stille Tal nach der violetten Weinglasmarkierung über Pörbach nach Wernersdorf (150 Minuten Gehzeit). Am Dorfplatz beim Nah & Frisch Markt Groß erhalten wir den Schlüssel für die Emmaus-Kapelle (Führungen werden von Herrn Veress auf Anfrage durchgeführt: 0664/3507840), in der 14 Heiligenfiguren als Wandmalereien des Künstlers Gerald Brettschuh zu sehen sind.

Von hier führt uns der gut beschilderte Emmausweg Richtung Wies, leicht ansteigend zur Nahat-Kapelle. Nun links auf Wiesen- und Waldwegen, über eine Brücke, am Biotop vorbei nach Vordersdorf zum GH Polz. Hier rechts die Straße entlang, vorbei an Hügelgräbern, dann über einen Wiesen- und Waldweg, dem Mariazellerweg folgend, über den herrschaftlichen Hof Aichberger. Von dort blicken wir schon auf Eibiswald. Wir gehen hinab ins Saggautal, über die Brücke und kommen zum Ausgangspunkt zurück.

In Wernersdorf wird dem Emmaus Evangelium, in welchem der „auferstandene“ Jesus zwei nach Emmaus pilgernden erscheint, große Bedeutung beigemessen. Bezugnehmend auf dieses Evangelium findet im Schilcherdorf Wernersdorf alljährlich am Ostermontag der Emmaus Gang, eine Sternwanderung von Eibiswald, St. Oswald, Wielfresen, Schwanberg und Wies nach Wernersdorf mit anschließender Präsentation des neuen Emmauswein-Jahrganges statt. Der Festgottesdienst wird von der Marktmusikkapelle Wies musikalisch umrahmt. Die Wanderung dauert ca. 2 Stunden und ist leicht zu bewältigen.

The Emmaus Chapel is the centerpiece of the village of Wernersdorf. It is a chapel for prayer, where visitors can admire 14 works by the artist Gerald Brettschuh.

Many starting points for our hikes in southern Styria can also be reached by public transport.

For a relaxed and sustainable journey, we recommend travelling by bus and train wherever possible. Depending on the region, additional local transport options are available.
