Between these towns lie interesting archaeological sites and a beautiful landscape of forests and meadows.

Nowhere else in Styria is the concentration of archaeological finds as high as here in the Sulm Valley. The trail winds through a veritable Styrian fruit basket, brimming with grapes, pumpkins, and carp. Quite unexpectedly, just before Otternitz, we suddenly find ourselves surrounded by a herd of deer. To the left and right along the mountain road lies a spacious game enclosure with impressive red deer. Then the viewpoints and archaeological stations come just in time to help us unwind. Here we can learn more or simply let our minds wander. The starting point is the St. Martin municipal office. From here, we turn right toward the church, where a station of the archaeological trail is located. Back on the main road, we continue along it for another 600 meters until the Sonnawend turnoff to the left. In a scenic loop, the route crosses over to Reitererberg and branches off to the left there, at the impressive wayside chapel. We follow the descending path, past a few fish ponds, back to St. Martin.

Coming from Graz via the A9, take the A2 toward Klagenfurt at the Graz-West interchange. Take the Lieboch exit and follow the B76 toward Lannach-Deutschlandsberg-Bad Schwanberg-St. Martin i.S.

Ausgangspunkt ist das Gemeindeamt St. Martin. Von hier geht es nach rechts zur Kirche, wo sich eine Station des archäologischen Weges befindet. Eine Reliefplatte, vermutlich aus einem nahen römischen Landgut, wurde nach dem Abriss des Pfarrhofes gefunden und an der Westfassade der Kirche eingemauert. Zu sehen ist ein Schreiber, der da gerade eine Wachstafel bearbeitet und auf den Gelehrtenstatus seines Hofes hinweist. Wieder retour an der Hauptstraße wandern wir an dieser noch 600 Meter weiter, bis zur Abzweigung Sonnawend nach links. Diese Straße überquert nach einem halben Kilometer den Leibenbach und folgt dem Gewässer nach rechts, bis der Archäologische Weg 2 vor einer weiteren Brücke nach links aufwärts abzweigt. Auf Straßen und Waldwegen wandern wir durch eine abwechslungsreiche Landschaft an einem Fischteich vorbei hinauf zu den paar Häusern in Hart. Hier zweigt der Weg nach links ab, durchquert wieder einen schönen Mischwald und verläuft bei den nächsten beiden Gabelungen jeweils nach rechts. Mit herrlichem Blick auf die Niederungen wandern wir wieder talwärts und kommen am Seniorenheim Waldhof und am Gasthof Otternitzerhof vorbei. Über fruchtbare Kürbissfelder hinweg treffen wir nach wenigen Minuten auf eine weitere Gabelung, bei der es sich auszahlt ein paar Minuten zu verweilen. Das rekonstruierte Hügelgrab in Otternitz zeigt den inneren Aufbau solch einer Begräbnisstätte und wie die Toten verabschiedet wurden. Im Volksmund heißen diese zahlreich vorhandenen Anlagen bezeichnenderweise "Heidenkögel". Der Weg zweigt nach links ab und führt oberhalb an einem Karpfenteich vorbei in den Wald und wieder hinauf zu den Hirschen von Otternitz. In einer aussichtsreichen Schleife verläuft die Route nach Reitererberg hinüber und zweigt dort, bei der beeindruckenden Wegkapelle, nach links ab. Wir folgen dem abwärts verlaufenden Weg, an einigen Fischteichen vorbei, zurück nach St. Martin.
