A keen-witted satire about politics, society, and democracy – more relevant today than ever.
With “Italian Night”, the youth theater of the theater center Deutschlandsberg / Neue Schmiede brings an impressive play by Ödön von Horváth to the stage.
The story takes place in a village in the 1930s: A cheerful “Italian Night” is actually supposed to be celebrated at the Lehninger inn. But when, on the same day, the local fascists also claim the venue and different strategies clash among the political groups, the situation escalates further and further. Amid ideals, conflicts, and social tensions, a piece unfolds that tells with fine humor and great depth about the challenges of a democracy.
Under the direction of Johanna Kainz, a dedicated ensemble brings the timeless social satire to the stage and invites reflection on solidarity, responsibility, and political developments.
