Gerald Brettschuh "Pastoralen"
A celebration for Gerald Brettschuh - Summer exhibition
Solo exhibition on the occasion of the 85th birthday of the artist based in Arnfels at the Greith Haus, St. Ulrich in Greith.
Brettschuh, who lives and works in Arnfels, is one of the prominent artistic voices of Styria and Austria. His work combines narrative power, irony, and a profound connection to the human experience. His visual language is rich in symbolism, characterized by subtle humor and a sensitivity to the abyss in the everyday. His compositions featuring people, animals, and mythical creatures open up spaces between reality and dream, myth and memory. Brettschuh does not provide pleasing answers, but rather poetic questions that extend beyond the visible.
For Styria, Gerald Brettschuh is a figure of cultural identification. Deeply rooted in the southern Styrian landscape, he has shaped the self-image of the region over decades. His works tell stories of rural life, customs, nature connection, and the quirky sides of country existence – always with a loving, vigilant gaze. As a painter, draftsman, and illustrator of Styrian literature, he has developed a visual language that is authentic and original.
Gerald Brettschuh was born on April 8, 1941, in Arnfels. After attending the primary and secondary schools in Arnfels, he completed the applied arts school at Ortweinplatz in Graz and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1968, he graduated from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna; subsequently, a scholarship took him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. From 1970 to 1976, he worked as a graphic designer, draftsman, illustrator, and assistant at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.
In 1976, Brettschuh returned to Arnfels and has since been active as a draftsman, painter, sculptor, and writer. With his work, he makes a distinctive contribution to the development of the contemporary art scene in Styria and Austria.
